Splendid, sparkling full calf by Bumpus with gilt raised bands, 'country' gilt centre tools, triple labels (excepting the first novel, 'Jorrocks's Jaunts' which was published anonymously) and with gilt corner tools and triple fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. These are all first editions in single volume book form excepting 'Handley Cross'. "Jorrocks's Jaunts' has 12 full page illustrations by 'Phiz', 'Hawbuck Grange' 8 plates by 'Phiz', the remainder have hand coloured plates by Leech. Some foxing and a small superficial stain to the lower board of 'Jorrocks's Jaunts'. A wonderful collection of these hilarious, vulgar and rollicking novels of English Country life in the early nineteenth century

Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1884. 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. An elegant full crushed morocco by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands and the panels and boards framed with gilt pallets and rolls. Wide gilt dentelles and gilt top edges. Armorial bookplates. 11 Japan mounted proofs and hundreds of woodcut illustrations throughout.

London: Bradbury & Evans 1853, 54, 58, 60 & 65. 5 volumes, 9 inches tall in half morocco cases 10 inches tall. The original cloth bindings are all in superb condition and are housed in top quality half morocco pull off cases with raised bands and gilt titles. The volumes have decorative titles and numerous hand-coloured plates, and further black and white illustrations in the texts. There is an armorial bookplate of Frederick George Hilton Price to 'Plain or Ringlets'. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Surtees was hugely popular in his day and he is still considered the master of the picturesque comic 'Field Sport' novel. William Morris considered him "a master of life" and ranked him with Dickens.

London: Chapman & Hall, 1887. Full morocco, 8 inches tall. Bound to the finest quality by Leighton of Soho with gilt raised bands and neat gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Bookplate of Leopold de Rothschild. Colour title page and 6 further colour plates.

Paris: Audot, 1822. 2 volumes complete, 8 inches tall. A most attractive set in half speckled calf with gilt pallets, large blue labels and delicate gilt centre tools. Armorial bookplate. Yellow edges and interesting endpapers. With 36 engraved plates. Described by Thiebaud (522) " Un des livres de chasse les plus agréablement illustrés de cette époque". In the original French.

Chester: J.Seacombe & London: Baldwin and Cradock, 1834. Full morocco, 8.75 inches tall. A beautiful binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands, very fine floral gilt tooling to the panels and a triple gilt fillet framing the boards. Top edge gilt. Armorial bookplate of Sir William Bass. Striking and sometimes fantastic full page engraved plates.

London: Hurst and Blackett, 1894. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A splendid half morocco by Riviere with gilt raised bands, 'hunting, shooting and fishing' gilt centre tools to the panels and gilt top edges. Bookplates. With a total of 33 plates. Inscribed by the author to his brother. Subscriber's special copy. These entertaining reminiscences contain the first recorded appearance of the phrase "like a duck to water".......I always took to shooting like a duck to water.

London: Rudolph Ackermann, 1843. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. A beautiful copy bound by Riviere with gilt raised bands and superb floral gilt tooling around a classic pomegranate centre tool. Triple gilt fillets frame the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. Original cloth cover bound in. The text comprises the memoirs of the Masters of Hounds; Notices of Crack Riders; and Characteristics of the Hunting Countries of England. With 32 illustrations by Alken, Wildrake and Henderson, including 9 engraved plates of Meets.

London: Chapman & Hall, 1887. Full morocco, 8 inches tall. A most good looking full morocco by Leighton with gilt raised bands, gilt tooled panels, dentelles and all edges. A charming work with 12 colour plates. Very slight scuffing to the boards, an excellent copy. With the bookplate of Alfred Freiherr de Rothschild of Halton House, Bucks..

A really splendid binding by TOUT with raised bands, classic hunting gilt centre tools within a cartouche and delicate gilt borders. Similar exquisite gilt tooling and quadruple fillets frame the boards. Fine woodcuts throughout. Slight marking to the boards, overall a lovely copy.

London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1896. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A beautiful binding in full crushed morocco by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands and superb field sport centre tools framed in the panels. The same centre tools adorn the boards around an ornate decorated panel. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate. Charming frontispiece and vignettes by Charles Whymper. A fine copy of one of Jefferies works in which the great English naturalist depicts various aspects of English rural life.

London: John Murray, 1870. Full calf, 7.5 inches tall. A very fine Victorian binding by Morrell with gilt raised bands, triple labels and equine gilt centre tools to the panels. Triple gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Delicate vignettes and 14 hand tinted engravings by Alken. A smart copy of this charming work.

London: R. Ackermann, 1813. Half morocco, 12 inches tall. A tall, elegant half morocco by Hatchards with raised bands and gilt framed panels. Gilt top edge. Finely printed on hand-made paper with delightful engraved vignettes throughout. Slightly rubbed and scuffed.

Edinburgh: Tait, 1845. Full morocco, gilt, 8.5 inches tall. A splendid binding with gilt raised bands, 'hunting, shooting and fishing' centre tools to the panels and large gilt devices to the boards framed within gilt fillets and corner tools. All edges gilt. With 10 fine lithographs. Spine slightly faded and light foxing to the portrait. Neat ink inscription '.........on leaving Eton 1857' on first blank.
