Tales and Novels by Maria Edgeworth.
London: Baldwin and Cradock and J. Murray et al., 1832-33. 18 volume set, 7 inches tall. A very pretty set in an Edwardian binding by Riviere in the 'Art Nouveau' style with gilt raised bands and delicate floral gilt tooling to the panels. Git top edges. Each volume has an engraved frontispieces and vignette on the title pages. There is small shelf ticket on the pastedown endpapers. The Anglo-Irish novelist and children's writer, Maria Edgeworth, was one of the most read novelists in the first half of the nineteenth century. Now best remembered for 'Castle Rackrent', this is a fine edition in a splendid binding.

A series of blind and gilt fillets and rolls frame the boards. With the armorial bookplate of Benj. Philpot Chr. Coll. Cant. Soc. , the neat ink inscription 'Gustavus Wulff from B. Philpot 1832' on the first blank and a partly obscured neat ink inscription at the head of the title page. Some rubbing and marking but still an interesting binding.

Gilt dentelles and all edges. Portrait. Christina Georgina Rossetti was an English writer of romantic, devotional and children's poems, including "Goblin Market" and "Remember", as well as the words of the carol "In the Bleak Midwinter".

With the heraldic crest of Vane Londonderry in the top panel. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. A scarce and elegant set of this first edition triple decker.

With the magnificent armorial bookplate of Vane Londonderry. An early advocate of women's rights having escaped an unhappy marriage and hostile husband. Early copies of her works are very rare even in institutions. A superb set.

London: Hunter; Baldwin et al., 1825. 14 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A lovely set in full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands and extra gilt panels. The boards are framed with gilt and blind rolls, so typical of bindings of this period. All edges gilt. This is a scarce first collected edition (Sadleir 784- "of extreme scarcity"). Engraved vignette on all title pages. Maria Edgeworth was a highly prolific writer of adult and children's literature and very influential in the development of the English novel.
