London: Baldwin, Cradock et al., 1818. Full morocco, 6 1/2 inches tall. A delightful little Regency full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, blind bands and extra gilt tooling to the panels. A series of gilt rolls and blind fillets frame the gilt and blind lozenge on the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With charming little crude engraved vignettes throughout. Shoulders slightly rubbed. The Sanskrit animal fables of Panchatantra date from at least as far back as B.C.200, translated into English in the Elizabethan period and by La Fontaine in the 18th Century as the Fables of Bidpai. This had become Pilpay by the time of this edition.

London: John Bell, 1774. Full vellum, 6 1/2 inches tall. A charming 18th century vellum binding with blue calf label, bands and border on the boards. Fine floral gilt tooling on the bands and in the panels, gilt fillets decorate the blue calf straps on the boards. An old hand has written "Edwards (of Halifax) binding" on the reverse of the front free endpaper but I can not verify that, though it is certainly in their distinctive style. There is a neat previous owner's name, "M: Dann" on the first blank. A fine, unsophisticated copy.

Newcastle: Printed by Hodgson, For Emerson Charnley, Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820. Full calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A fine Regency full calf with wide gilt raised bands and rather wonderful gilt tooling to the panels around a peacock, A series of gilt and blind fillets frame dense blind 'basket weave' tooling on the boards. Engraved portrait, title page and more than 360 vignettes cuts illustrating the charming fables. From the library of Lord Kinnaird of Rossie Priory. A little foxing, specifically to the portrait, otherwise a superb copy.

London: Bulmer, 1796. 2 volume bound in 1, 9.5 inches tall. A 20th century good quality binding with gilt raised bands, titles and centre tools. A fascinating collection of fables and tales collected from manuscript sources in the Bibliothèque Nationale when Le Grand held the position of conservator of manuscripts after the Revolution in 1795. Embellished with some charming engravings, several by Bewick.

Paris: Carrington, 1906. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A handsome set with raised bands, delicate gilt tooled panels and top edges. Limited to one thousand copies and published in Paris due to its somewhat racy contents. Sometimes known as 'The Pleasant Nights' or 'The Facetious Nights', these 16th century fables and tales contain several of the first appearances of fairy stories still that are still familiar today.

Paris: Joseph Barbou, 1754. Full calf, 6.25 inches tall. A superb early nineteenth century binding possibly by White, with gilt raised bands, delightful dense pomegranate gilt tooling to the panels, double gilt fillet framing the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. From the Sotheby sale of 29th April 1852. Engraved frontispiece. Phaedrus was a 1st century A.D. Roman fabulist, now known to be the first writer to compile entire books of fables, retelling the tales of Aesop. A wonderful copy in the original Latin.

Paris: Renouard, 1812. Half calf, 5.25 inches tall. A delightful little volume with gilt bands on mottled calf with twin labels. Note the red corners. Embellished with engravings throughout. With the armorial bookplate of William Danby of Swinton Hall.

London: Geo: Lawford, 1828 & 1833. 2 volume set, 10 inches tall. A wonderful full morocco binding by C(harles) Lewis with raised bands, very fine tooling to the panels, dentelles and all edges gilt. Exceptionally tall copies with vignettes and decorated initials throughout. James Northcote, as well as being a celebrated Fabulist was a fine artist.

London: Suttaby, 1813. Full morocco, 2 volumes bound in 1, complete, 5.25 inches tall. From a larger set of "The Works of the British Poets", hence the volume number on the spine. In a beautiful Regency binding in full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, gilt centre tools and blind corner tools to the panels and all edges gilt. On both boards a Grecian lyre within a wreath is framed by elaborate blind tooling. Armorial bookplate. Engraved frontispieces to both volumes. An exquisite little volume.

London: The Stanhope Press, 1813. Full red embossed leather. 5.25 inches tall. Black label and all edges gilt. The leather had been embossed with a heavy diagonal grain. 2 volumes bound in 1, complete. 2 finely engraved frontispieces.
