The straight grain on the boards is framed within a series of gilt and blind panels. With the ticket of 'Gardiner Bookseller & Stationer, Dublin'. Embellished with engravings from the designs by Richard Westall. Foxing facing the tissues.

Paris: Renouard, 1812. Half calf, 5.25 inches tall. A delightful little volume with gilt bands on mottled calf with twin labels. Note the red corners. Embellished with engravings throughout. With the armorial bookplate of William Danby of Swinton Hall.

London: The Florence Press by Chatto & Windus, 1909. Full crushed morocco, 11 inches tall. A remarkable binding by J(ulius) Dratva of Vienna with large raised bands and simple gilt framed panels. The upper board shows St Francis kneeling before a winged Christ through an arch with dragon heads in the top corners. All edges have very unusual floral gilt gauffering. A gilt armorial device G.T. with a Griffin wielding an anchor and sword on the paste down endpaper. Number 191 from a limited edition of 500. An exceptional item.

Londres: (Cazin), 1781. 2 volume set, 5.25 inches tall. A fabulous little full morocco set of the highest quality by the great Parisian binder Paul Charles Allo. One of the celebrated editions of Cazin. This work was once attributed to Dumouriez (hence the title on the spine) but is in fact an adaptation of Forteguerri's work. With the red leather bookplate of Leon Rattier. A superb example of this very scarce edition in pristine condition.

London: Dent, 1894. Half morocco, 5.25 inches tall. A delightful little volume with fine gilt tooling to the spine and gilt top edge. With line illustrations throughout by Aubrey Beardsley.

London: The De La More Press, 1904. Full pink calf, 6.5 inches tall. A delightful full calf by Bumpus with gilt raised bands, delicate gilt tooling to the panels and boards, dentelles and all edges. Finely printed on handmade paper with full page black and white illustrations and red frontispiece. Ink inscription on the free endpaper. A splendid copy of this Persian allegory.

Paris: (Cosson for) Lecointe et Durey, 1824. 5 volume set, 7 inches tall, Quarter calf with twin labels and gilt centre tools. Some fading and rubbing to the boards. Small split to the foot of volume one, but still perfectly solid.First edition in French of The Inheritance (Edinburgh, 1824). Scottish novelist Susan Ferrier's popular second novel, translated by Defauconpret, already established as the translator of sir Walter Scott.

Paris: Gruel & Engelmann, 1885. Full morocco, 6.5 inches tall. Bound by Gruel in full crushed morocco with gilt titles, all edges and yapp edges. A neat inscription on the first blank. A charming volume in pristine condition.

Edinburgh: Peter Hill, 1809. Full calf, 8.5 inches tall. An unusual mottled calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. With the book plate of 'Fasque', the family seat of the Gladstones and where Queen Victoria's Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, spent much of his childhood. Slightly rubbed.

Paris: Anisson, 1700. 2 volume set, 6.25 inches tall. Full mottled calf with gilt bands, twin labels and gilt panels. Pink edges. 'Doctor Doctus' is written by hand on the title page. A particularly handsome clean copy of this work.

New York: Gabriel Wells, 1924. 30 volume set, 9 inches tall. Half crushed morocco with gilt raised bands, titles and fine gilt tooled panels. Gilt top edge. Deluxe edition, limited to 1075 sets, the first volume of each set is signed by the author. Portrait. The definitive set of this great writers works in English in excellent condition.

London: Cadell et al., 1808. Full straight grain morocco, 9 inches tall. With gilt and blind tooled wide raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels, gilt and blind tooling framing the boards, dentelles and all edges. Some foxing, particularly to the preliminaries. Some marks and scuffing but generally in excellent condition with no splitting or loss.

Paris: Isidore Liseux, 1889. Half crushed morocco, 6.5 inches tall. With 2 gilt raised bands, titles, fine floral tooling to the main panel with onlays for the petals and top edge gilt. Isidore Liseux famously specialised in printing tales that were considered too racy to be printed in England. These 16th century tales are mildly erotic and here translated for the very first time into English. A fascinating item, beautifully bound.
