With gilt raised bands, superb gilt tooling to the panels and triple fillets framing the boards, wide gilt dentelles and all edges. With the bookplate of M.C.D.Borden. This is the celebrated Stothard edition with all 22 engraved plates called for, bound with an extra 25 plates. Very slight loss of some gilding but a beautiful and unique copy of one of the most popular and influential English novels of the 18th century.

A glorious full morocco binding almost certainly by by The Harcourt Bindery of Boston with gilt raised bands and remarkable floral gilt tooling and onlays to the panels and boards. Wide gilt dentelles frame exquisite green crushed morocco doublures featuring a red rose. Watered silk free endpapers. All edges gilt. These two volumes, containing the works of Robert Herrick, were part of a deluxe set, the Crown Edition, of 'The Poets of Great Britain' originally published in 72 volumes. This extra-illustrated set in this splendid binding is believed to be number 1 of 10 such sets. A superb set of the works of this great lyric poet.

London: William Baynes: 1824. 6 volume set, 9 inches tall. A splendid set in half morocco with gilt raised bands, fine extra gilt floral tooling to the spine.top edges gilt. Containing over 300 extra plates. Armorial bookplate. Some Foxing. The Remarkable Rev. James Granger, as well as being an early animal rights activist, for which he was twice jailed, pioneered the fashion for extra illustrating books, the practice of which he gave his name viz.to Grangerize.

A rather magnificent full morocco with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and superb ornate gilt tooling around a heraldic crest to the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Double column. Engraved portrait of Shakespeare, engraved title page, full page engravings of scenes from Shakespeare's Plays and 45 full page extra illustrated engravings of Shakespeare's heroines. Some rubbing to the binding, loss of both free end papers and slight foxing to the tissues and portraits but still an impressive set.

London: Richard Bentley, 1866. 2 volume set, 8 inches tall. A neat half calf for Hatchards of Piccadilly with gilt raised bands, gilt framed panels and top edges. A most entertaining account of eccentrics embellished with 90 interesting portraits indicative of behaviour or appearance outside the expected. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. An excellent set in fine condition.
