A magnificent set in 18th century full straight grain morocco with gilt bands, extraordinary centre tools, dentelles and all edges gilt. A delightful gilt roll frames the boards. With the bookplates of Sir William Eden Bart. From the library of a County Durham Country House. With an engraved portrait frontispiece and a further 46 engraved plates. Curiously, an extra suite of plates from another edition, after Cipriani, Moreau le jeune, Eisen and Cochin has been quite crudely pasted onto the reverse of the plates. These additions were obviously made before the book was bound as the shape of the volumes is perfect. Very slight rubbing, some marks to…

    London Cadell and Davies, 1820. 2 volume set, 9 3/4 inches tall. A fabulous full crushed morocco by one of the greatest Parisian firms of the 19th century, Chambolle-Duru. With gilt raised bands, superb gilt tooling to the panels and triple fillets framing the boards, wide gilt dentelles and all edges. With the bookplate of M.C.D.Borden. This is the celebrated Stothard edition with all 22 engraved plates called for, bound with an extra 25 plates. Very slight loss of some gilding but a beautiful and unique copy of one of the most popular and influential English novels of the 18th century.

These two volumes, containing the works of Robert Herrick, were part of a deluxe set, the Crown Edition, of 'The Poets of Great Britain' originally published in 72 volumes. This extra-illustrated set in this splendid binding is believed to be number 1 of 10 such sets. A superb set of the works of this great lyric poet.

Some rubbing to the binding, loss of both free end papers and slight foxing to the tissues and portraits but still an impressive set.
