A very pretty set in an Edwardian binding by Riviere in the 'Art Nouveau' style with gilt raised bands and delicate floral gilt tooling to the panels. Git top edges. Each volume has an engraved frontispieces and vignette on the title pages. There is small shelf ticket on the pastedown endpapers. The Anglo-Irish novelist and children's writer, Maria Edgeworth, was one of the most read novelists in the first half of the nineteenth century. Now best remembered for 'Castle Rackrent', this is a fine edition in a splendid binding.

The Sabbath Harp, A Selection of Sacred Poetry.
Bristol: W. Richardson, 1828. Full blue calf, 5 1/2 inches tall. A delightful William IV diced calf on a very scarce title, we could only locate 2 examples of any edition in institutions. This copy is in remarkable condition with gilt raised bands, blind centre tool framed with gilt corner tools and a darker blue label. The dicing on the boards is framed within an ornate little gilt fillet. Bristol imprint. With the neat ink inscription "Mary Ann Marks. Aug. 1828 á Jesse" on the second blank. A little foxing on the engraved title page, otherwise clean. Some neat pencil underlining and highlighting.

Some offsetting, otherwise clean. With the bookplate of Vane Londonderry. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

The boards are framed with gilt and blind rolls, so typical of bindings of this period. All edges gilt. This is a scarce first collected edition (Sadleir 784- "of extreme scarcity"). Engraved vignette on all title pages. Maria Edgeworth was a highly prolific writer of adult and children's literature and very influential in the development of the English novel.
