A spectacular binding by Rivière & Son with gilt raised bands and extra gilt tooling with a stylized cross within a cartouche repeated on the panels and the boards within a series of gilt fillets and rolls. Gilt dentelles and all edges. From the collection of Robin de Beaumont and with his bookplate. An ink inscription regarding a Church Dedication Festival, dated 1884, on the paste down endpaper. Unpaginated, black letter text, printed in red and black, decorative floral criblé border to each page throughout. James Burns was a distinguished bookseller in Manchester and then London celebrated for his illustrated books. An extremely attractive copy in fine condition.

An extraordinary and magnificent full hard grain morocco by Catherall & Pritchard with gilt raised bands, ornate gilt tooling to the panels and boards, gilt dentelles and all edges gauffered. Unpaginated, including facsimile title page and colophon of Richard Grafton (1550), printed in red and black throughout. Ornamental initials and woodcut headbands and musical notations. Light foxing. From the library, and with the bookplate of, R.H.L.-C. de Beaumont.

An early Victorian full bottle green velvet binding with brass edges, fully functioning clasps and engraved shields at the centre of the upper boards. All edges gilt. Delightful gilt silk 'endpapers', the paste down 'endpapers' being within velvet doublures. No inscriptions and in pristine condition inside and out. The blind tooled leather box is also in remarkably fine condition.

Oxford: Rivington, 1834. 6 volume set, 9 inches tall. A magnificent full calf binding by one of the great London binders of the period J. Clarke. With gilt raised bands, twin labels, ornate gilt tooling to the panels, dentelles and all edges. With the armorial bookplate of Henry Collins.

London: Rivington, 1832. Full morocco, 8.25 inches tall. Full morocco with wide raised gilt bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and a remarkable wide gilt roll to the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges gilt.

London: Ryley, 1838. Full morocco, 8.5 inches tall. A very scarce item with exquisite hand coloured initials and full page 'illuminated' plates. The spine and boards are decorated with gilt 'Cathedral' tooling. All edges gilt. Some rubbing but a fine example of this choice edition.

London: John Murray, 1847. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. An exceptionally handsome classic mid 19th century full calf binding. With gilt raised bands, twin labels, very finely gilt tooled panels and all edges gilt. An embossed prize block on the upper boards and a prize plate on the paste down endpaper dated 1850. A pristine set of this famous history.

London: George Virtue, 1847. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. A delightful binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, dentelles and all edges. Embellished with full page engravings and many woodcuts within the text. From the Library and with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst. Some foxing, in particular on the title page.

Tours: Maison Alfred Mame et fils, c.1900. 4 volume set, 5 inches tall. A delightful little set in full crushed morocco with gilt bands, gilt tooling to the panels, twin labels, charming gilt rolls and swags framing the boards. Watered silk endpapers and all edges gilt. With no inscriptions, a pristine set of these devotional works with their original box.

London: Printed by W. Bowyer for William and John Innys, 1720. 8vo (9.25" tall). Full straight grain aubergine morocco. Wide gilt raised bands, gilt lettering to panels. Double gilt rule with small corner tools framing boards. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Wide margins and lovely woodcut head- and tail-pieces. All published. A superb copy.

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1776. 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. Splendid full 18th century speckled calf with raised bands, gilt pallets and label. Some scuffing to the boards. A slip 'To Lieut General Melvill at John Balfour's Esq in the Advocate's Close Edinb.' is enclosed. This would appear to refer to General Robert Melvill, inventor of the carronade and Governor of Guadeloupe. A superb set of Bishop Horne's most celebrated work. From the library of the Farquharson family at Invercauld Castle.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1902. Full morocco, 6.25 inches. with raised bands and simple gilt and blind tooling in the manner of Cobden-Sanderson. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Bookplate. An unusual printing which, to suit Anglican Protestant sensibilities, omits the fourth book which deals with the Roman catholic Mass. A delightfully bound copy.

London: Longman, 1801. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A superb little set with gilt bands and exquisite gilt tooling, typical of the very beginning of the 19th century. Blue speckled edges. A scarce early edition of the Sermons of this famous English wit, writer and Anglican.

Manchester: M. Bancks, 1815. Full straight grain morocco, 5.5 inches tall. A delightful little volume with gilt bands and centre tools on the spine and gilt 'Cambridge' panels framing the straight grained boards. All edges gilt. One leaf has a small repaired tear without loss. A very pretty copy of this rare provincial imprint.

Berlin: Verlag von Veit und Comp, 1834-1835. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A beautiful little devotional work in straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, finely gilt tooled panels, dentelles and all edges. The boards are framed with gilt and blind rolls and corner tooling. Watered silk endpapers. A neat ink inscription dated 1836 and a blind armorial stamp are found on the first blank. This Breviary of the Laity is used in Western Christianity for praying the canonical hours.

London: Longman, 1816 and 1820. 4 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. Elegant full calf Regency binding with wide gilt raised bands, twin labels and blind and gilt tooling to the panels and boards. All edges gilt. With the bookplate and signiture of Lord Elden. Slight fading to the spines and very minor worming to some joints but still a firm and handsome set.

London: Cassell, Petter & Galpin, c.1870. Full calf with inlays, 10.5 inches tall. Stunning binding with the binder's ticket of Manning of Greenwich with gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling and green labels and lozenges on the boards. Illustrated throughout. Some foxing which is heavy on the last few leaves.

London: Bohn, 1846. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. A classic mid-Victorian binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine extra gilt tooled panels. Illustrated throughout. A particularly nice copy of this revised edition.

Paris: Anisson, 1700. 2 volume set, 6.25 inches tall. Full mottled calf with gilt bands, twin labels and gilt panels. Pink edges. 'Doctor Doctus' is written by hand on the title page. A particularly handsome clean copy of this work.

Oxford: The University Press, 1836. 2 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A splendid early Victorian full calf with raised bands, twin labels and gilt tooled panels. Small loss to the head cap of the second volume but still a very smart set.
