A beautiful little Georgian binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt and blind tooling to the panels and framing the boards. A finely printed pair of volumes, bound in one, embellished with three engraved plates, an engraved title page and frontispiece. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

A handsome set bound in full calf by Hayday with gilt raised bands, gilt and inked pallets and twin labels to the panels and twin gilt and a single blind fillet framing the boards. 2 portraits, 2 plates of 'Coins relating to the Age of Petrarch' and a sepia view of 'Fountain of Vaucluse and Castle of the Bishop of Cavaillon'. Bookplate on the reverse of the free endpaper of volume I. Some scuffing and scratching but overall a fine set of this life of Francesco Petrarca, scholar and poet of early 14th century Renaissance Italy.

All edges gilt. Slight foxing to the preliminaries, a lengthy ink inscription on the second blank and the name 'Mary Wheatley' on the half title.

Q-Ships and their story.
London: Sidgwick and Jackson, 1923. Half calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid half navy blue calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. With the gilt prize block of The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty on the upper board and their prize bookplate on the front paste down endpaper. "One of the most glorious chapters in the chronicles of the sea", also known as "Mystery Ships" were heavily armed gunboats disguised as merchantmen, and were designed to lure enemy submarines into making surface attacks. With photographic illustrations and line diagrams throughout.

Dentelles and all edges gilt.Foxed frontispiece and title page followed by a very clean double column text. Crabbe was hugely popular in his day and an influence on Byron, Austen and Wordsworth. Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes is based on his great poem The Borough.

Engraved frontispiece to volumes 1 and 3 opposite which is some degree of foxing, otherwise clean. A charming edition of the works of this tragic English satirist and poet.
