A very handsome set in late Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels , gilt and blind pallets and neat gilt centre tools. With full page plates. A chronological encyclopaedia of English Literature from the 'earliest times to the second half of the nineteenth century.

London: MacMillans' 1892. Full morocco, 7 1/4 inches tall. A superb full crushed morocco with raised bands, gilt titles, dentelles and all edges. A gilt coronet atop the initial 'R' is on the upper board. Some rubbing to the shoulders. With the bookplate of Durdans, Rosebery's Surrey country house. Inscribed to The Earl of Rosebery on the first blank, a letter in the same hand is loosely inserted and a blind stamp on the title page. Lord Rosebery famously said that he had three aims in life: to win the Derby, to marry an heiress, and to become Prime Minister. He achieved all three.

A wonderful binding, almost certainly by Charles Lewis with gilt raised bands, superb gilt tooling to the panels, dentelles and all edges gilt. This volume, contains 'The Misfortunes of Arthur'; 'Downfall of Robert Earl of Huntingdon'; 'Death of Robert Earl of Huntingdon'; 'Woman is a Weathercock'; & 'Amends for Ladies'. It represents the Supplementary, XIIIth volume, of the set of 'Dodsley's Old Plays'.

London: Printed at the Stanhope Press, by Charles Whittingham for John Sharpe, 1805. Full calf, 5 1/4 inches tall. A beautiful little Georgian binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt and blind tooling to the panels and framing the boards. A finely printed pair of volumes, bound in one, embellished with three engraved plates, an engraved title page and frontispiece. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

London: Suttaby et al., 1816. Full morocco, 5 inches tall. A delightful Regency straight grain morocco binding with gilt bands and intricate extra gilt tooling to the panels. On the boards a gilt foliate centre tool is framed within an ornate gilt roll. All edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece and title page. A charming anthology of ballads, 'Legendary and Pathetic'.

Paris: Buisson, 1797. 2 volume set, 8 inches tall. A simple but good looking late 18th century 'russia' calf from the library of Lord Kinnaird of Rossie Priory. With gilt bands and titles. Some rubbing and slight splitting but still firm and solid. Embellished with 6 engraved portraits. In the original French.

London: Henry Colburn, 1841. 2 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A handsome set bound in full calf by Hayday with gilt raised bands, gilt and inked pallets and twin labels to the panels and twin gilt and a single blind fillet framing the boards. 2 portraits, 2 plates of 'Coins relating to the Age of Petrarch' and a sepia view of 'Fountain of Vaucluse and Castle of the Bishop of Cavaillon'. Bookplate on the reverse of the free endpaper of volume I. Some scuffing and scratching but overall a fine set of this life of Francesco Petrarca, scholar and poet of early 14th century Renaissance Italy.

London: Nattali and Bond, 1831. 2 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. A charming and very scarce work describing a critical period in the history of Paris. Smartly bound in half morocco with a title label and dense gilt tooling on a smooth back. Embellished with a folding map of Paris, 13 engraved views and 26 wood-cuts. Armorial bookplates. Some foxing. This history contains an account of the revolution of 1789; the Tuileires, the Massacre of St Batholomew, Sieges of Paris and the Louvre.

London: Bell & Daldy, 1867. Half crushed morocco, 8 inches tall. A neat volume bound by Bayntun of Bath with raised bands, gilt framed panels, titles and all edges. Extracted from 'Aunt Judy's Magazine' volume IV, issue 20, pp 65-78 (blanks bound at rear). Predating the 1889 and 1893 editions. A charming fairy story, bound beautifully and illustrated with a frontispiece by Gilbert.

London: John Churchill and W. Flexney, 1766. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A simple yet elegant binding with gilt bands and titles. Armorial bookplate. A neat owner's name dated 1821 on the title page and the publisher and executor, John Churchill, has signed his name at the end of the work. A fine edition of the works of this celebrated satirist and poet.

London & Boston: The Medici Society, n.d. c.1920. Full morocco, 5 1/2 inches tall. A scarce little edition in a full crushed morocco binding by Hatchards. A delightful volume containing several obscure as well as more familiar Christmas Carols.

Lyon: B. Cormon et Blanc, Reymann, An VIII, 1800. 2 vols., 8vo (8.25 x 5.25 inches). Superb contemporary full tree calf, twin red and green labels, very pretty tooling to spine and framing boards, marbled edges and endpapers. Slightly rubbed. Signed by the author in black ink to verso of half-title. An excellent binding.

London: John Murray, 1847. Full calf, 9.5 inches tall. A superb Victorian binding with gilt raised bands, red label and very fine extra gilt panels. Dentelles and all edges gilt.Foxed frontispiece and title page followed by a very clean double column text. Crabbe was hugely popular in his day and an influence on Byron, Austen and Wordsworth. Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes is based on his great poem The Borough.
