Paris: L. Curmer, 1861. Full morocco, 13.25 inches tall. An extraordinary binding by Riviere with gilt titles to the spine and both boards and extraordinary blind tooling to the panels, boards and doublures. Vellum endpapers. All edges gilt. This is the text volume, red ruled throughout, and is offered WITHOUT the Plates. In 'Fine and Historic Bookbindings from the Folger Shakespeare Library', published in 1992 a very similar binding is described and illustrated (page 222, item 14:5). It is described as 'a Pastiche of a 16th Century Panel-Stamped Binding by Riviere and Son, c.1881'.

London: Akerman (sic) et al., 1822. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. Superb later crushed morocco by Bayntun with gilt raised bands, gilt panels, framed boards, dentelles and all edges. With 12 hand coloured aquatints. A pristine copy of this great mock heroic Civil War poem through the story of Sir Hudibras and his comic adventures.

London: Routledge, 1879. Full morocco, 9 inches tall. A very handsome binding by Field of Regent Street with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, dentelles, prize inscription on the upper board and all edges. Prize bookplate to the upper board. Embellished with 110 engravings.

Amsterdam: Changuion, 1772. 5 volume set, 8 inches tall. A very fine 18th century binding in full citron straight grain morocco with a series of gilt bands, triple labels and dense blind tooling to the panels. The boards have a series of blind and gilt rolls. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate and the bookseller's ticket of Pickering of Piccadilly. Slightly rubbed but still a binding of real quality.

London: Rivingtons, 1874. Full calf, 11 inches tall. A tall 'Divinity' or 'Oxford' calf binding in pristine condition with raised bands, well defined inked tooling to the panels and boards, gilt centre tools and a bold red label. Red edges. Double column. An exceptional example of this scarce and comprehensive work.

London: J.F. Dove, 1826. Full vellum, 5 inches tall. A delightful little full vellum with gilt bands and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. A blue fillet frames the boards. With 'The Life of Robert Burns' by Dr. Currie. Engraved frontispiece and title page.

Berlin: Verlag von Veit und Comp, 1834-1835. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A beautiful little devotional work in straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, finely gilt tooled panels, dentelles and all edges. The boards are framed with gilt and blind rolls and corner tooling. Watered silk endpapers. A neat ink inscription dated 1836 and a blind armorial stamp are found on the first blank. This Breviary of the Laity is used in Western Christianity for praying the canonical hours.

London: Dove, 1826. Full calf, 5 inches tall. A handsome little binding with wide gilt raised bands and ornate tooling to the panels. Frontispiece. Joseph Butler influenced many philosophers and religious thinkers of the period, including Adam Smith and David Hume.

Paris: Dubochet, 1842. Full calf, 10.5 inches tall. A stunning full cat's paw calf by Clarke & Bedford, one of the finest binders of the period in pristine condition. With gilt raised bands, delightful label and superb gilt tooling to the panels. With gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate. Embellished with 4 hand coloured engraved plates, 2 portraits, and full page engravings and vignettes throughout.

Paris: Didot, 1791. Full tree calf, 4.75 inches tall. Delightful 18th century binding with gilt bands and red label. Speckled edges.

ondon Elliot stock, 1896. 2 volume set, 7 inches tall. Half red crushed morocco by Bickers with gilt raised bands and exquisite gilt tooling to the spine. Top edges gilt. With the bookplate of Clive Behrens and gilt initials on the upper boards of C(harlotte) L(ouisa) R(othschild), his wife.

Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne for Longmans et al, 1809. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A very simple yet elegant Georgian full calf with gilt bands, delicate centre tools and titles. A lovely example of this very rare item of which only a few copies are recorded in institutions. With the armorial bookplate of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo.

London: Religious Tract Society, c.1870. Full crushed morocco, 6.5 inches tall. A superb little binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, dentelles and all edges. Scattered light foxing. A neat ink inscription dated 1871 on the 3rd blank. Illustrated full page engravings.

London: John Sharpe, 1827. Full crushed morocco, 5.5 inches tall. A delightful little volume in a simple yet very elegant binding with raised bands, gilt titles, dentelles and all edges. With 6 engravings by Westall. In the minor poems, pages 143 to 165 were not bound in.

London: Vernor et al, 1801. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. Bound in a later Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. Pink speckled edges. Illustrate with beautiful engraved vignettes and full page engravings. Some foxing. With the ink signature on the first blank of Charles William Corfe, Oxford, Organist and composer and friend of Lewis Carroll.

London: Edward Moxon, 1843-1846. 11 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A truly splendid full hard grain morocco by one of the greatest binders of the period, White of Pall Mall. With gilt raised bands, unusual dense gilt tooling to the panels and gilt dentelles. All the edges are gilt over marbling. The heraldic crest on both boards is framed within magnificent gilt rolls and individual tooling. The crest with the motto 'Sic Donec' is that of William Tatton Egerton, 1st Baron Egerton of Tatton Park. A wonderful set of the Works of these two early 17th century English playwrights, often considered successors to Shakespeare.

London: Ackerman, Walker and Co., et al, 1822. 2 vols., 8vo (8 1/2" tall). Full pink calf by J. ATKINSON, Spurriergate, York and with their ticket. Twin labels with attractively arched volume lettering. Gilt raised bands, fine floral tooling to panels. Very pretty gilt and blind floral roll, framing blind star-shaped floral motif to both boards. 12 superb hand coloured engravings. Gilt dentelles, edges marbled. Slightly sunned on spine, otherwise a fine set.

London: Richard Bentley, 1837-45. 8vo (9½" tall). Superb full red crushed morocco, by TOUT. Gilt raised bands and pallets, fine gilt tooling to panels. Boards framed with gilt floral corner tool. Gilt doublures with floral patterned endpapers. Top edge gilt. Foxing. Armorial bookplate of the noted book collector Hermann Marx. Original issues of Bentley's Magazine. Bound with special title page, contents and a preface dated 1889 by the collector John Waugh. Autograph letter in black ink bound in, dated "Sept. 2" [1844], 4 pages. A unique copy.

London: Rodwell and Martin, 1820. Full morocco, 10.5 inches tall. A most attractive binding with twin gilt raised bands and extra gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are also densely decorated with gilt and blind tooling framing an elaborate central device. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Slightly rubbed but still a fine firm and clean example. With 60 splendid views and vignette on the title page. A superb example of this scarce work.
