London: Nimmo and Bain, 1883. Half morocco, 9 inches tall. A simple but accomplished binding by the great firm of Ramage, with raised bands and neat gilt framed panels. The spine is faded but bright on the shelf. One of 150 copies. With 4 etchings and a portrait of Beckford by A.H. Tourrier.

Firenze: Presso Gius. Molili E Comp. All' insegna di Dante, 1820. Full morocco, 5 1/2 inches tall. A stunning little volume in a richly gilt smooth back bound in the early 19th century. Engraved title page and frontispiece. From the library of Alfred de Rothschild and with his bookplate. A pristine copy of this great 14th century series of short stories, in the original Italian.

Newcastle: Printed by Hodgson, For Emerson Charnley, Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820. Full calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A fine Regency full calf with wide gilt raised bands and rather wonderful gilt tooling to the panels around a peacock, A series of gilt and blind fillets frame dense blind 'basket weave' tooling on the boards. Engraved portrait, title page and more than 360 vignettes cuts illustrating the charming fables. From the library of Lord Kinnaird of Rossie Priory. A little foxing, specifically to the portrait, otherwise a superb copy.

London: The Religious Tract Society, 1836. Full Calf, 4 inches tall. A tiny and delightful devotional work in a charming early Victorian binding with gilt raised bands, label and superb extra gilt panels. With the neat ink former owner's inscription 'Mary Ann Ashley, January 1840.

London: Longman et al., 1820. Full calf, 6 3/4 inches tall. A delightful Georgian binding with wide gilt raised bands elaborate gilt tooling to the panels, triple gilt fillets framing the boards and pink speckled edges. With splendid crude woodcuts illustrating the verse.

London: Bradbury, Agnew & Co., 1897. Half morocco, 11 inches tall. A scarce quarto late Victorian edition in an imposing half morocco by Zaehnsdorf with raised bands and gilt centre tools and top edge. With 10 tipped on hand coloured plates and numerous vignettes throughout on india paper by John Leech. Rather large ink inscription on the past down endpaper.

London: Menzies, 1905. Full morocco, 11 1/2 inches tall. A stunning full crushed morocco for Sawyer with gilt raised bands extraordinary gilt foliate tooling to the panels and boards. With gilt top edge and wide gilt dentelles. With all 23 portraits of Lady Hamilton. Lady Emma Hamilton was an inspiration to many, mistress of Horatio Nelson, favorite model of Romney, wife of the British ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples and ultimately a tragic figure, dying in poverty in Calais.

London: Robinson, 1789. 3 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A fine copy with wide margins in a superb 18th century tree calf with gilt bands and magnificent labels on a smooth back. Yellow edges. From the library of Vane Londonderry, Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. This is the first English edition with half titles, folding engraved map, folding engraved plan of Madrid, folding engraved view of Gibraltar and a further 8 folding engraved plates.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1908. Full Morocco, 8 1/2 inches high. A stunning binding by Bumpus with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, elaborate gilt paneling to the boards, dentelles and all edges. A wonderful copy, printed on handmade paper, of these potted biographies by Brantôme 1540-1614. celebrated adventurer and historian.

London: Arthur Hall, 1853. 3 volume set, 8 inches tall. A neat Mid-Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt centre tool to the panels. Engraved frontispieces and title pages. A previous owner, Abraham Dawson(?), has left his name, dated 1862, on the second title page, and has left a neat manuscript list of contents on the reverse of the title pages and a page number on the engraved title page of volume 1.

London: George G. Harrap, 1929. Full calf, 8.25 inches tall. A sparkling tree calf binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt Prize inscription to the upper board and bookplate. A stirring anthology of rollicking adventures to inspire the children of the Empire. Illustrated throughout.

Paris: L. Curmer, 1861. Full morocco, 13.25 inches tall. An extraordinary binding by Riviere with gilt titles to the spine and both boards and extraordinary blind tooling to the panels, boards and doublures. Vellum endpapers. All edges gilt. This is the text volume, red ruled throughout, and is offered WITHOUT the Plates. In 'Fine and Historic Bookbindings from the Folger Shakespeare Library', published in 1992 a very similar binding is described and illustrated (page 222, item 14:5). It is described as 'a Pastiche of a 16th Century Panel-Stamped Binding by Riviere and Son, c.1881'.

With 12 hand coloured aquatints. A pristine copy of this great mock heroic Civil War poem through the story of Sir Hudibras and his comic adventures.
