London: Longman et al., 1820. Full calf, 6 3/4 inches tall. A delightful Georgian binding with wide gilt raised bands elaborate gilt tooling to the panels, triple gilt fillets framing the boards and pink speckled edges. With splendid crude woodcuts illustrating the verse.

London: Bradbury, Agnew & Co., 1897. Half morocco, 11 inches tall. A scarce quarto late Victorian edition in an imposing half morocco by Zaehnsdorf with raised bands and gilt centre tools and top edge. With 10 tipped on hand coloured plates and numerous vignettes throughout on india paper by John Leech. Rather large ink inscription on the past down endpaper.

London: Menzies, 1905. Full morocco, 11 1/2 inches tall. A stunning full crushed morocco for Sawyer with gilt raised bands extraordinary gilt foliate tooling to the panels and boards. With gilt top edge and wide gilt dentelles. With all 23 portraits of Lady Hamilton. Lady Emma Hamilton was an inspiration to many, mistress of Horatio Nelson, favorite model of Romney, wife of the British ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples and ultimately a tragic figure, dying in poverty in Calais.

London: Robinson, 1789. 3 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A fine copy with wide margins in a superb 18th century tree calf with gilt bands and magnificent labels on a smooth back. Yellow edges. From the library of Vane Londonderry, Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. This is the first English edition with half titles, folding engraved map, folding engraved plan of Madrid, folding engraved view of Gibraltar and a further 8 folding engraved plates.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1908. Full Morocco, 8 1/2 inches high. A stunning binding by Bumpus with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, elaborate gilt paneling to the boards, dentelles and all edges. A wonderful copy, printed on handmade paper, of these potted biographies by Brantôme 1540-1614. celebrated adventurer and historian.

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1688. 2 volume set, 7 3/4 inches tall. A splendid 18th century tree calf with gilt pallets and twin labels to the spine. Slight rubbing and split to the upper board of volume I but still firm and secure. Shelf label on paste down end papers. A fascinating and beautifully printed work with 104 Engraved Plates, many folding, of coins, emblems and medals. In the original French.

London: Arthur Hall, 1853. 3 volume set, 8 inches tall. A neat Mid-Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt centre tool to the panels. Engraved frontispieces and title pages. A previous owner, Abraham Dawson(?), has left his name, dated 1862, on the second title page, and has left a neat manuscript list of contents on the reverse of the title pages and a page number on the engraved title page of volume 1.

London: Printed at the Stanhope Press by Charles Whittingham for John Sharpe, 1806. 3 volume set, 5.25 inches tall. A delightful little set with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Engraved frontispieces.

London: James Burns, (1843). 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A classic full Victorian calf by Parker, with gilt raised bands, twin labels, fine gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. With a prize block on the boards and a neat ink prize inscription to the reverse of the front end paper in volume 1. Illustrated with engraved vignettes. Volume II states in the preface that as well as several...tales of the "Thousand-and-one-Nights".... 'four tales are given, for the first time in this country, from the German of Grimm (Jalaladdeen, Haschem, the To Talismans, and Jussuf)'. A superb little set of a very scarce work.

London: George G. Harrap, 1929. Full calf, 8.25 inches tall. A sparkling tree calf binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt Prize inscription to the upper board and bookplate. A stirring anthology of rollicking adventures to inspire the children of the Empire. Illustrated throughout.

Paris: L. Curmer, 1861. Full morocco, 13.25 inches tall. An extraordinary binding by Riviere with gilt titles to the spine and both boards and extraordinary blind tooling to the panels, boards and doublures. Vellum endpapers. All edges gilt. This is the text volume, red ruled throughout, and is offered WITHOUT the Plates. In 'Fine and Historic Bookbindings from the Folger Shakespeare Library', published in 1992 a very similar binding is described and illustrated (page 222, item 14:5). It is described as 'a Pastiche of a 16th Century Panel-Stamped Binding by Riviere and Son, c.1881'.

London: Akerman (sic) et al., 1822. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. Superb later crushed morocco by Bayntun with gilt raised bands, gilt panels, framed boards, dentelles and all edges. With 12 hand coloured aquatints. A pristine copy of this great mock heroic Civil War poem through the story of Sir Hudibras and his comic adventures.

London: Routledge, 1879. Full morocco, 9 inches tall. A very handsome binding by Field of Regent Street with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, dentelles, prize inscription on the upper board and all edges. Prize bookplate to the upper board. Embellished with 110 engravings.

Amsterdam: Changuion, 1772. 5 volume set, 8 inches tall. A very fine 18th century binding in full citron straight grain morocco with a series of gilt bands, triple labels and dense blind tooling to the panels. The boards have a series of blind and gilt rolls. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate and the bookseller's ticket of Pickering of Piccadilly. Slightly rubbed but still a binding of real quality.

London: Sampson Low, c.1930. Tree calf, 7.5 inches tall. A most handsome binding by Morrell with gilt raised bands, twin labels and floral gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt prize block on the upper board and prize bookplate. Colour plates. A lovely copy of this classic 'Romance of Exmoor'.
