A remarkably beautiful binding by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, twin olive labels and dense, ornate gilt tooling with green calf onlays to the panels and boards. Wide and ornate gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Extra-illustrated with a further 30 plates. 'An Essay on some of the Characteristics of Reynolds as a Designer, with especial Reference to his Portraiture of Children'. With the bookplate of Chippenham Lodge. A charming work in sparkling condition.

London: Reeves & Fisher Unwin. January 1882- June 1884. 5 volumes, 8 3/4 inches tall. A handsome half vellum with extra gilt panels and gilt bands on a smooth back. Pink top edges. Armorial bookplates. Run of the first five volumes (eventually running to 12 volumes with changes to the title and publisher over time). With 29 plates, 2 coloured. A scarce work with much fascinating information.

London: John Scott, 1806. 5 volume set, 9 inches tall. A beautiful Regency set in straight grain morocco bindings with gilt raised bands, blind bands and fine gilt tooling to the panels. Splendid panels have been constructed with gilt and blind tooling to the boards, so typical of the period. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Watered-silk end papers. With the armorial bookplate of Frederick H. Dutton of Sherborne House. There is a neat previous owner's name in ink on the title pages. Embellished with 150 engraved plates. A very fine set.

London: Longmans, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1852. Full calf, 8 1/4 inches tall. A superb binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. All edges gilt and dentelles on large squares. With the bookplate of Alfred de Rothschild. Embellished with 152 woodcuts and 29 line engravings, as called for. Slight blotchiness on the labels and boards, overall a wonderful volume of one of Dublin born, Anna Brownell Jameson's, great art histories.

London: T. Cadell, 1825. 2 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A splendid Georgian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels including finely tooled volume labels and highly ornate extra gilt panels. Portrait. A celebrated biography of the great 15th century Italian statesman, ruler of the Republic of Florence, Politician, banker and the most important patron of the Italian Renaissance sponsoring Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo amongst many others. A very good looking set.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1882. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A wonderful full crushed morocco binding by Riviere with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and with triple gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. With the armorial bookplates of W.H. Lever of Thornton Manor, Sir W. Hesketh Lever, Bart. and Baron, Lord Leverhulme of Bolton-Le Moors, all one and the same and the founder of 'Port Sunlight'. This beautiful set has an extra 89 plates, 34 hand-coloured, bound in, some particularly interesting ones, including Mr. Kean as Richard and as Count Bertram and 2 box tickets for His Majesty's Theatre. A unique set in pristine condition.

Splendid late Victorian full morocco bindings by Bickers with gilt raised bands and exquisite gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. A neat ink signature dated 1894 on the front free endpapers. Very profusely illustrated throughout with vignettes and full page plates. Some foxing in particular on the preliminaries. A very good looking set of this great Dublin born art historian.

London: Printed at the Shakspeare Press for John Major and Robert Jennings, 1828. 5 volume set, 10 inches tall. A splendid tall set in full hard grain morocco by Clarke & Bedford, one of the greatest names of the period. With gilt raised bands and very fine extra gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt fillets, and superb gilt tooling with corner devices frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With the bookplates of William Strahan and Alfred de Rothschild. This celebrated edition has the plates in 2 states, with the proofs laid down on india paper. Slight foxing but overall a fine set of this great edition.

London: Nimmo, 1891. 4 volume set, 9 1/2 inches tall. A simple yet elegant edition bound in half morocco by Stikeman with raised bands, gilt titles and top edges. Limited to 1040 copies, this being number 478. Illustrated with a portrait, 24 steel and mezzotint full page engravings and numerous engravings on wood. A fine set.
