A pristine copy bound in quarter straight grain morocco with raised bands, twin labels and seasonal mistletoe gilt centre tooling to the panels. With original heavy paper wrappers bound in. With many fine full page illustrations by the finest illustrators of the day. A superb copy of this Studio 'Special Winter Number' of 'The Studio' 1900-1901.

Paris: Rue Sainte-Anne, 1900-1901. Half morocco, 11 1/2 inches tall. In a splendid half orange morocco with appropriate gilt tooling featuring Pan and Cupid and an ornate label. The shoulders are rubbed and there is some staining to the covers but no splitting or loss. 63 consecutive issues from volume no.1, 20th October 1900, to volume no. 63, 28th December 1901. 1060 pages, each one illustrated with up to 6 cartoons. The Illustrators include Picasso (Ruiz); Petitjean; Alber Guillaume; Roubille; Willete; André Rouveyre; Ferdinand Bac; Henri Gerbault and Préselan. There is a single risqué theme to every cartoon! A very nice run of this famous publication in a lovely binding.

Berlin: Photographische Gesellschaft Berlin, 1895. Full morocco, 26 1/2 inches tall by the great London firm of Leighton of Golden Square and with their ticket. A binding of the finest quality with 2 raised bands on a smooth back and an elaborate series of gilt rolls to the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edge. Scratch to the lower board and light foxing, otherwise pristine. An elephant folio with 51 photogravures printed on hand-made paper of works by Rembrandt. With 3 title pages listing 16 plates from the Dresden Gallery, 17 from the Cassel Gallery and 18 from the Berlin Gallery. The blind stamp of the Photographische Gesellschaft Berlin is found in the margin under each plate. This is a Rothschild copy from the Exbury House Library.

Philadelphia: Privately printed, 1931. Magnificent full morocco, 18 inches tall. With gilt raised bands, superb extra gilt panels and exceptional gilt tooling to the boards. With wide dentelles and watered silk doublures and end papers.
 Widener and his father assembled an extensive and valuable art collection displayed at Lynnewood Hall. The collection included works from Bellini, Cellini, Degas, Donatello, El Greco, Frans Hals, Gainsborough, Monet, Raphael, Rembrandt, Titian, Van Dyck. His great philanthropic endeavor was as founding benefactor of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In 1942, Widener donated over 2,000 pieces of art to the museum. A unique and spectacular copy in its original slip case.

London: John Murray, 1850. Full calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid binding with gilt raised bands, contrasting label and extra gilt panels. Some rubbing, foxing and slight fraying to the fore edge of one plate. With 12 colour plates and vignettes throughout.

London: Shakespeare Press, for John Major, 1826-1828. 5 volume set, 10 inches tall. A beautiful later straight grain morocco binding by Riviere with gilt bands on green calf on a smooth back and gilt tooling to the panels. Triple gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Slight rubbing, but a fine clean set. Illustrated with 80 fine full page engraved portraits. Horace Walpole was an English politician, art historian and antiquarian, celebrated for writing this great work of art history and the first Gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto'.

A stunning dark pink hard grain morocco binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and magnificent gilt tooling to the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Book plate. Illustrated throughout. A fine set of this classic work by the Dublin born art historian, Mrs. Jameson.

Gilt dentelles and all edges. With 100 copperplate engravings, as called for. A huge and very heavy volume in excellent condition.

Munich: P. Kaeser, 1881. Full morocco, 26 1/2 inches tall. A colossal and superb full morocco binding by the great firm of J. Leighton of Brewer Street from the library of Alfred de Rothschild, but without his bookplate. With twin gilt raised bands and wonderful gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With 50 engraved plates, as called for. Some scratches to the lower board, otherwise in fine condition. A huge and very heavy volume in German and French.

London: Remington and Co., 1884. Full morocco, 8 1/2 inches tall. A remarkably beautiful binding by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, twin olive labels and dense, ornate gilt tooling with green calf onlays to the panels and boards. Wide and ornate gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Extra-illustrated with a further 30 plates. 'An Essay on some of the Characteristics of Reynolds as a Designer, with especial Reference to his Portraiture of Children'. With the bookplate of Chippenham Lodge. A charming work in sparkling condition.

London: T. Cadell, 1825. 2 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A splendid Georgian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels including finely tooled volume labels and highly ornate extra gilt panels. Portrait. A celebrated biography of the great 15th century Italian statesman, ruler of the Republic of Florence, Politician, banker and the most important patron of the Italian Renaissance sponsoring Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo amongst many others. A very good looking set.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1882. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A wonderful full crushed morocco binding by Riviere with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and with triple gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. With the armorial bookplates of W.H. Lever of Thornton Manor, Sir W. Hesketh Lever, Bart. and Baron, Lord Leverhulme of Bolton-Le Moors, all one and the same and the founder of 'Port Sunlight'. This beautiful set has an extra 89 plates, 34 hand-coloured, bound in, some particularly interesting ones, including Mr. Kean as Richard and as Count Bertram and 2 box tickets for His Majesty's Theatre. A unique set in pristine condition.

Limited to 1040 copies, this being number 478. Illustrated with a portrait, 24 steel and mezzotint full page engravings and numerous engravings on wood. A fine set.
