A delightful 18th century binding in full straight grain morocco with gilt bands, very attractive tooling to the panels and the boards decorated with a splendid gilt roll. Dentelles and all edges gilt. A finely printed edition of the Manual of Epictetus, a short manual of Stoic advice. Printed in Paris in the original Greek.

A slip 'To Lieut General Melvill at John Balfour's Esq in the Advocate's Close Edinb.' is enclosed. This would appear to refer to General Robert Melvill, inventor of the carronade and Governor of Guadeloupe. A superb set of Bishop Horne's most celebrated work. From the library of the Farquharson family at Invercauld Castle.

This great parody of the Aeneid was written by the extraordinary Paul Scarron, first husband of Madame Maintenon, future wife of Louis XIV.
