A handsome set bound in full calf by Hayday with gilt raised bands, gilt and inked pallets and twin labels to the panels and twin gilt and a single blind fillet framing the boards. 2 portraits, 2 plates of 'Coins relating to the Age of Petrarch' and a sepia view of 'Fountain of Vaucluse and Castle of the Bishop of Cavaillon'. Bookplate on the reverse of the free endpaper of volume I. Some scuffing and scratching but overall a fine set of this life of Francesco Petrarca, scholar and poet of early 14th century Renaissance Italy.

Lipsiae [Leipzig]: Sumtibus et typis Caroli Tauchnitzii, 1810. 2 volumes bound in 1 complete, 4.75 inches tall. A fine full Regency calf with raised bands, gilt and blind pallets framing the panels, gilt and blind fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. The bookplate of the writer Maurice Baring as well as a previous owner's ink name on the first blank. Light foxing. It was published by Carl Tauchnitz (1761-1836), the first German publisher to use stereotyping. A neat little set of these great Tragedies in the original Greek.

Gilt dentelles and all edges. Extra illustrated with a portrait of Anacreon following the title page. Ownership inscription of John Bullock (1831) and bookplate of Maurice Baring. A charming little edition of a selection of the lyric work of the celebrated Greek lyric poet, notable for his drinking songs and erotic poems.

His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.
