Wonderful crushed morocco 'Kelliegram' style inlays of characters from Francis Wheatley's 'The Cries of London' inlaid on all 6 upper boards by Bayntun of Bath, these are framed within a series of gilt and blind tooled boarders. Gilt dentelles and all edges. This set has been doubled in size by the inclusion of 470 engraved views and portraits, many hand-coloured. There is some uniform fading to the spines which are still bright and most attractive and very occasional foxing to a few plates, otherwise pristine. A sumptuous and unique set.

There is some rubbing to the binding with a few tiny patches of superficial loss but no splitting of the joints. A magnificently bound work of reference illustrated with hundreds of armorial crests.

Frances Burney, known as Fanny Burney and then, at the age of 41, Madame d'Arblay, having married the French exile General Alexandre d'Arblay. She was the daughter of Charles Burney, English music historian, composer and musician. Frances Burney was a great English satirical novelist and diarist. She wrote her most celebrated novel, 'Evelina' in 1778 which she followed with 'Cecilia', 'Camilla' and 'The Wanderer'. Between the years 1786–1790 she was 'Keeper of the Robes' to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, George III's queen. A wonderful set.

Many of the stories deal with love, lust, infidelity, and other romantic and sexual matters. A very fine set of these 16th century tales in the original French.
