London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1875 & 1877. 10 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A very handsome Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and finely gilt panels around a pomegranate centre tool. A splendid set of the Works complete in 8 volumes and the Life complete in 2 volumes. There is some minor rubbing and the engraved frontispiece of the Life is offset, otherwise a clean and pristine set of this great history.

London: J. Johnson, 1798. 2 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. Very pretty little 18th century tree calf bindings with gilt bands on a smooth back, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. With a neat ink previous owner's name "Mary Anne Watten (?) November 1825". Embellish with engravings by Stothard. A firm and clean set of these once hugely popular and influential poems.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1890. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid late Victorian tree calf by Riviere with gilt raised bands, delicate floral gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. A gilt roll frames the boards. With 8 folding maps. Scratching to the lower board of the fourth volume, but still a fine and elegant set of this classic history.

Shaftesbury: Printed and Published by the author & London: Longman, Rees et al., 1829. Half calf, 10 inches tall. A charming Georgian binding with wide gilt raised bands and extra gilt panels. Armorial bookplate. Embellished with engraved frontispiece, folding map and 12 lithographs. A fine tall copy.

London: A. Wilson, 1812. Full Calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A most attractive Regency full diced calf with inked and gilt raised bands and ornate gilt centre tools. The diced boards are framed within a delicate gilt fillett. Double Column. A single volume edition of Smolletts' great history covering the period..."from the Revolution in 1688, to the Death of George the Second. Designed as a Continuation of Hume".

London: Shakspeare Printing Office, 1804. Full morocco, 9 inches tall. A superb later crushed morocco by the great firm of Bedford. With gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Slight rubbing. With delightful full page engravings and engraved vignettes by Bewick. With lives of Goldsmith and Parnell, Parnell's greatest poem, 'The Hermit' and Goldsmith's 'The Traveller' and 'The Deserted Village'.

London: John Murray, 1869. Full morocco, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid heavy Victorian full hard grain morocco with the coronet and initials of Baron Saye et Sele of the Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family in the top panel. With gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels, gilt dentelles and all edges. With a gilt blocked crest on both boards and prize bookplate on the paste down endpaper. Foxing to the preliminaries, then clean. Slight rubbing. An impressive copy of this biography of the great Roman statesman and philosopher.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1858. 3 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A rather jaunty Victorian half calf binding by Henry Young of Liverpool with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt tooling to the panels. A scarce and thorough life of Edmund Burke, the founder of the social and cultural philosophy of conservatism.

London: John W. Parker, 1855. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A handsome set of this scarce history in a mid Victorian half calf by Henry Young of Liverpool. With gilt raised bands, twin labels and elegant gilt tooling to the panels. Some scuffing to a couple of corners, otherwise fine. Bookplate. A History of George the Third whose momentous reign covered the Independence of the United States of America and the French Revolution.

London: Bradbury, Evans, & Co., c.1870. 8 volume set, 9 inches tall. A very handsome set in a Victorian glowing half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and and extra gilt tooling to the panels. Slight foxing to the preliminaries and an old auction lot number on the corner of volume 1. Illustrated throughout with engraved vignettes and full page plates. An unusually good looking set of this popular edition.

London: Richard Bentley, 1834. Full Calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A most unusual early Victorian full calf binding by E. Watson of Marylebone High Street, and with their ticket. With raised bands, gilt pallets and neat geometric gilt tooling. Gilt corner tools and double fillets frame the boards. Ink inscription on the front free endpaper. A very clean copy of the second edition of this travelogue by the writer and art critic best known for his 'Gothic Novel' "Vathek".

London: Rivington,et al., 1817. Full calf, 5 inches tall. An exceptionally pretty little Regency calf binding with wide gilt raised bands, label and decorative gilt tooling to the panels. A wide gilt roll framed the fine gilt embossed boards. A splendid red calf Ex-Libris presented to a Miss L. Partridge. Light foxing to the engraved frontispiece and title page. Two works by Voltaire, done into English, in a superb little binding.

A stunning dark pink hard grain morocco binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and magnificent gilt tooling to the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Book plate. Illustrated throughout. A fine set of this classic work by the Dublin born art historian, Mrs. Jameson.

Edinburgh: William Paterson, 1879. 3 volume set, 8 inches tall. A superb crushed morocco by Andrew Grieve of Edinburgh with gilt bands and delightful gilt floral tooling to the panels on a smooth back. Gilt top edges. From a limited to 485 copies. Sir David Lyndsay was a 16th century knight and herald whose poetry is still celebrated today.

Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1826. 8 volume set, 9 inches tall. A superb, if slightly faded, full William IV hard grain morocco with raised bands, gilt titles, dentelles and all edges. With the armorial bookplate of Laurence Currie. Slight rubbing but a very handsome and clean set of Clarendon's great 'History of the Rebellion'.

London: Jones & Co., 1822. Half morocco, 8 1/2 inches tall. A handsome Victorian binding by Murphy of Liverpool, with gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling incorporating shamrocks in the panels and gilt top edge. With an hilarious hand-coloured frontispiece and 18 further outrageous plates by, amongst others, Henry Alken and William Heath. The binding is slightly faded, but still bright. There is some foxing, occasional creasing and slight grubbiness but overall an unusually good example of this scarce work in the style of Pierce Egan.

London: John Fairburn, 1822. Full calf, 9 1/2 inches tall. A sparkling later full calf binding by Tout with gilt raised bands, superb extra gilt tooling to the panels and triple labels. Delicate gilt tooling frames the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With the armorial bookplate of George Seton Veitch. Original wrapper bound in. Embellished with 21 hand comic hand-coloured aquatints by George Cruikshank and a further 22 wood engravings. This unique copy also contains a tipped in signature of George Cruikshank, a tipped in note by Robert Cruikshank and a tipped in letter of George Bell. Slightly rubbed but still a super copy of the rollicking adventures of a band of young English Gentlemen enjoying life to the full in Paris.

London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1890. Full calf, 8 inches tall. A classic late Victorian tree calf binding by Griffiths with gilt raised bands and exceptional extra gilt panels. With the gilt prize block of Waterloo College on the upper board and their bookplate on the front paste down end paper. Well illustrated throughout. Some light foxing. The title continues "...the Natural History and geology of the Countries Visited during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, under the Command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N.."

London: G. Virtue, 1830. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. An exceptionally tall copy in a beautiful later full straight grain morocco binding by Sotheran of Piccadilly. With gilt raised bands, a superb boxing centre tool within an ornate cartouche in the panels and the boards, gilt dentelles and top edges, the remaining edges untrimmed. With 2 armorial bookplates. Embellished with all 36 hilarious hand-coloured aquatints from designs by Robert Cruikshank. A pristine example of this great comic work, in which our heroes continue with their debauched adventures around London.
