Leather Bound Sets

London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1861. 5 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. An exceptionally smart set in a Victorian full calf by Bryce, with gilt raised bands, bold twin labels and striking gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt corner tools, triple fillets and a blind fillet frame the boards. All edges gilt. Bookplate. A splendid set of this great History.

London: George Virtue (1841). 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A superb half hard grain morocco with splendid wide gilt raised bands, gilt framed panels and all edges gilt. The early Victorian binding has a very interesting ribbed paper on the boards and fine end papers. Embellished with I map, 2 engraved title pages and 118 full page engraved views. There is no portrait as is often the case. Some foxing to the plates. There is a small superficial stain to the upper board of volume 2. A lovely set.

London: Effingham Wilson, 1830. Full calf, 8 1/4 inches tall. An exquisite full mottled calf by the great firm of Bedford, with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine floral gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt corner tools and triple fillets frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edge. With 7 engravings by George Cruikshank, including the vignette on the title page, as called for. A scarce and charming work in a superb binding in pristine condition.

London: Jones & Co., 1830. 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A superb half hard grain morocco with splendid wide gilt raised bands, gilt framed panels and all edges gilt. The early Victorian binding has a very interesting ribbed paper on the boards. Embellished with 2 engraved title pages and 224 engraved views on 112 plates. Some foxing to the plates. There is a small superficial stain to the lower board of volume I. A lovely set.

Edinburgh: James Nichol, 1858. Full calf, 8 3/4 inches tall. A rather beautiful Victorian full pink calf with gilt raised bands, green label and superb extra gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. The three poets, Armstrong, Dyer and Green were near contemporary 18th century poets, being born within 15 years of each other.

London: John Fairburn, 1822. 9 inches tall. A beautiful later full straight grain calf by the brilliant and elusive Lucien Broca. With gilt raised bands and superb extra gilt tooling to the panels. Triple gilt fillets frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edge. Embellished with 21 hand comic hand-coloured aquatints by George Cruikshank and a further 22 wood engravings. An exceptionally lovely copy of the rollicking adventures of a band of young English Gentlemen enjoying life to the full in Paris in excellent condition in a binding by one of the greatest craftsmen of his generation.

London: Richard Bentley, 1837. 6 volume set, 9" tall. A very pretty later full calf by Riviere with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine gilt tooling around a cornucopia. Twin gilt fillets frame the boards, dentelles and gilt top edge. There is a degree of rubbing and weakness to the shoulders and slight blotchiness to the spines. Embellished with 24 full page engraved plates and 28 folding tables. A very good looking set of this great work which covers the period from 'The Declaration of War by France in 1793, to the Accession of George IV'.

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Thomas Cadell, 1835 to 1859. 19 volume set, 9" tall. A very smart full straight grain calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. This set comprises both series of Alison's History. "From The Commencement of The French Revolution in M.DCC.LXXXIX. to the Restoration of the Bourbons In M.DCCD.XV" in 10 volumes. "From the Fall of Napoleon in MCCCDXV to the Accession of Louis Napoleon in MDCCCLII", in 8 volumes. There is an index volume but no atlas volume. Some foxing to the blanks, otherwise clean. A splendid set of this classic History of Europe by this celebrated Scottish historian, fresh from an English Country House.

London: John Murray, 1839. 3 volume set, 6 1/2" tall. Delightful set in a splendid half morocco binding with gilt raised bands and extra gilt panels. Armorial bookplate. A neat little set of the works of Henry Hart Milman, historian and professor of poetry at Oxford.

London: Longman and Co., et al., 1838. 4 volume set, 8 3/4" tall. A classic Victorian full calf by the great firm of Hayday with raised bands, twin labels, and neat gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets, one blind fillet and gilt corner tools frame the boards. Portrait. A handsome set of the works of the highly influential 18th century theologian, William Paley, mostly remembered for his work on natural theology and ethics.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1887. 4 volume set, 7" tall. Handsome full Victorian calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and neat gilt center tooling. Armorial bookplate. A neat ink previous owner's inscription dated, 1891, on the first blank. All edges gilt. A splendid and comprehensive list of the English poets from Geoffery Chaucer to Dante Gabriel Rossetti in excellent condition.

Edinburgh: Stirling & Slade et al., 1820. 7 volume set, 8 1/2" tall. A classic Regency full calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt tooling to the panels. A simple gilt fillet frames the boards. Red speckled edges. Engraved portrait. Somewhat rubbed and scuffed, but overall a handsome set of the works of this 18th century writer.

Alnwick: W. Davison, 1842. Full calf, 6 3/4 inches tall. A delightful little Victorian, 'Divinity' or 'Oxford' binding with raised bands, olive label and ornate blind tooling to the panels and boards. Pink edges. Withe the Binder's Ticket of Birdsall. Each fable has a charming engraved vignette. A fine little edition of these celebrated 18th century fables.

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1849. 2 volume set, 7 inches tall. A very smart little set in a Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and a straight grain embossed on the spines. A folding frontispiece. With a previous owner's neat ink name dated 1849 at the head of the title page. An interesting early text from Bohn's Antiquarian Library.

London: Longman, Rivingtons et al., 1847. 8 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A very good looking Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt and a blind fillet frame the splendid blind device on the boards. Portrait. There is a neat ink inscription, dated 1853 on the first blank. There are some minor scratches, nibblings of a long defunct insect and a couple of small splits not affecting the integrity of the binding. This edition 'Accurately printed from the Text of the Corrected Copies Left by the Late George Steevens, Esq., and Edmond Malone, Esq.,.... (with) a history of the Stage, & A Life of Shakspeare; by Alexander Chalmers'.

London: Longmon, Hurst, Reece, Orme and Brown, 1822. Two volume set, 8 1/2". A superb Georgian full diced calf from the library of the Duke of Portland, and with his book plate. With gilt raised bands, twin labels and highly decorative gilt tooling. Twin gilt fillets frame the boards. 2 engraved frontispieces. Foxing to the engraved frontispieces, as usual. Lucy Aikin was a remarkable academic and Historian from a family of writers.

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1848. Half calf, 7" tall. A neat Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and a straight grain embossed on the spine. A charming work with a boldly colored frontispiece, being, a 'Contemporary Narrative of the Crusade of Richard Coeur de Lion by Richard of Devizes and Geoffrey de Vinsauf; and of the Crusade of Saint Louis by Lord John de Joinville'. With a previous owner's neat ink name dated 1849 at the head of the title page. An interesting early text from Bohn's Antiquarian Library.

London: J,Boydell,1792. 3 volume set 9 1/2" tall. A handsome later half calf by Larkins. With gilt raised bands, twin labels and good looking floral gilt tooling to the panels. A well illustrated 18th century set of the work of William Hogarth with a engraved portrait, 3 engraved title pages and a further 128 full page engravings. There is a tipped in original signature with the date 1757 in pencil. With a little foxing and the pink spine is slightly blotchy otherwise a fine, clean set.
