Leather Bound Sets

Oxford: John Henry and James Parker, 1860. 2 volumes, 6 3/4 inches tall. A superb set of Victorian 'Divinity' or 'Oxford' bindings with raised bands, twin labels and sombre blind tooling to the spine and boards. Pink edges. Jeremy Taylor was a 17th century theologian, referred to as "The Shakespeare of Divines" as one of the finest writers of prose in the English language. These 2 titles were his most popular works and intended as manuals of Christian life. Classic titles in fine examples of this style of devotional bindings. With the armorial bookplate of Robert Williams, from the recently dispersed library of a Dorset Country House. Portrait. Slight rubbing and light foxing to the portrait, overall a lovely copy of this scarce edition in English.

London: J. M. Dent & Co., c.1900. Full morocco, 5 3/4 inches tall. A wonderful example of one of Ramage's luxurious full morocco bindings (see our extensive selection), in pristine condition. With gilt raised bands, extraordinary extra gilt tooling to the panels and boards. With wide gilt doublures, watered silk 'end papers', and all edges gilt. Portrait and decorated title page. London: Wm. S. Orr and Co., (1849). 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. An exceptionally fine full calf binding by Bradstreet's with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. Gilt dentelles and top edges. With superb comic engravings by Phiz throughout. With the original paper wraps bound in. A splendid copy of the first edition by Charles Lever, considered the 'Irish Dickens' in his day and illustrated by the artist most famed for his illustrations to the works of Charles Dickens.

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1820. 2 volume set, 10 inches tall. An impressive early Victorian full hard grain morocco binding by the great firm of Wright. With raised bands, gilt pallets and twin gilt fillets framing the boards. The initials J.R. are on the tail of both spines. All edges gilt. Embellished with 2 engraved vignettes on the title pages and 20 full page engravings, as called for, by Thomas Stothard. A little foxing to several plates, overall in pristine condition. A very handsome set of Defoe's early 18th century tale, which remains one of the most popular adventures ever written.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1875 & 1877. 10 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A very handsome Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and finely gilt panels around a pomegranate centre tool. A splendid set of the Works complete in 8 volumes and the Life complete in 2 volumes. There is some minor rubbing and the engraved frontispiece of the Life is offset, otherwise a clean and pristine set of this great history.

London: J. Johnson, 1798. 2 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. Very pretty little 18th century tree calf bindings with gilt bands on a smooth back, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. With a neat ink previous owner's name "Mary Anne Watten (?) November 1825". Embellish with engravings by Stothard. A firm and clean set of these once hugely popular and influential poems.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1890. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid late Victorian tree calf by Riviere with gilt raised bands, delicate floral gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. A gilt roll frames the boards. With 8 folding maps. Scratching to the lower board of the fourth volume, but still a fine and elegant set of this classic history.

Shaftesbury: Printed and Published by the author & London: Longman, Rees et al., 1829. Half calf, 10 inches tall. A charming Georgian binding with wide gilt raised bands and extra gilt panels. Armorial bookplate. Embellished with engraved frontispiece, folding map and 12 lithographs. A fine tall copy.

London: A. Wilson, 1812. Full Calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A most attractive Regency full diced calf with inked and gilt raised bands and ornate gilt centre tools. The diced boards are framed within a delicate gilt fillett. Double Column. A single volume edition of Smolletts' great history covering the period..."from the Revolution in 1688, to the Death of George the Second. Designed as a Continuation of Hume".

London: Shakspeare Printing Office, 1804. Full morocco, 9 inches tall. A superb later crushed morocco by the great firm of Bedford. With gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Slight rubbing. With delightful full page engravings and engraved vignettes by Bewick. With lives of Goldsmith and Parnell, Parnell's greatest poem, 'The Hermit' and Goldsmith's 'The Traveller' and 'The Deserted Village'.

A splendid heavy Victorian full hard grain morocco with the coronet and initials of Baron Saye et Sele of the Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family in the top panel. With gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels, gilt dentelles and all edges. With a gilt blocked crest on both boards and prize bookplate on the paste down endpaper. Foxing to the preliminaries, then clean. Slight rubbing. An impressive copy of this biography of the great Roman statesman and philosopher.

A rather jaunty Victorian half calf binding by Henry Young of Liverpool with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt tooling to the panels. A scarce and thorough life of Edmund Burke, the founder of the social and cultural philosophy of conservatism.

With gilt raised bands, twin labels and elegant gilt tooling to the panels. Some scuffing to a couple of corners, otherwise fine. Bookplate. A History of George the Third whose momentous reign covered the Independence of the United States of America and the French Revolution.

Slight foxing to the preliminaries and an old auction lot number on the corner of volume 1. Illustrated throughout with engraved vignettes and full page plates. An unusually good looking set of this popular edition.

London: Richard Bentley, 1834. Full Calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A most unusual early Victorian full calf binding by E. Watson of Marylebone High Street, and with their ticket. With raised bands, gilt pallets and neat geometric gilt tooling. Gilt corner tools and double fillets frame the boards. Ink inscription on the front free endpaper. A very clean copy of the second edition of this travelogue by the writer and art critic best known for his 'Gothic Novel' "Vathek".

London: Rivington,et al., 1817. Full calf, 5 inches tall. An exceptionally pretty little Regency calf binding with wide gilt raised bands, label and decorative gilt tooling to the panels. A wide gilt roll framed the fine gilt embossed boards. A splendid red calf Ex-Libris presented to a Miss L. Partridge. Light foxing to the engraved frontispiece and title page. Two works by Voltaire, done into English, in a superb little binding.

Edinburgh: William Paterson, 1879. 3 volume set, 8 inches tall. A superb crushed morocco by Andrew Grieve of Edinburgh with gilt bands and delightful gilt floral tooling to the panels on a smooth back. Gilt top edges. From a limited to 485 copies. Sir David Lyndsay was a 16th century knight and herald whose poetry is still celebrated today.
