A superlative later full morocco binding by the great firm of Bedford, from the library of a Scottish Gentleman, in pristine condition. An exceptionally tall copy with gilt raised bands, ornate floral gilt tooling to the panels, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, wide gilt dentelles and top edges gilt. With 36 hand coloured aquatints by I.R. and George Cruikshank and 3 folding pages of songs. The original paper spine and cover, and advertisements, bound in. The images illustrate the hilarious and bawdy adventures of Jerry and his companions in Regency London. A beautiful volume.

    London: Macmillan, 1894. Full calf, 6 1/2 inches tall. A remarkable cuir-ciselé, sculptured, or chiseled binding, in pristine condition, thanks to the felt lined solander box in which it is housed. The smooth spine is simply gilt tooled and the upper board has a floral cuir-ciselé design within twin gilt fillets with the date August 12 1897 in gilt. The lower boards has a single cuir-ciselé flower to the upper corner. Dentelles and top edge gilt. With an unusual endpaper with stenciled petals. Slight foxing to the preliminaries, otherwise clean. Arthur Hugh Clough was an English poet and famously the devoted assistant to Florence Nightingale and the brother of suffragist Anne Clough. A lovely and unique binding.

Extra illustrated with engraved portraits and suites of plates by Cochin, Marillier and Moreau le Jeune, many in 2 or 3 states. Some foxing to the plate margins. In volume I has a 2ff. autograph LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR TO COUNTESS DE MONTBARON bound in. A few words have been excised and supplied in a different hand. On the reverse of the front free endpaper of volume 1 is the ornate calf bookplate of Léon Rattier. This is a beautiful large paper, extra-illustrated copy of this finely illustrated edition from Didot. The autograph letter from Fénelon, addressed to the Countess of Montbaron, wife of the governor General of Flanders, refers to their correspondence and correspondents (published in: Correspondance de Fénelon, Gèneve, droz, 1989, Vol X, no. 734, p.158). Regrettably there is light water staining to the lower half of much of volume 2. This can be seen in one of the images of the engraved plates in this post and also in the image showing very slight irregularity of the foredge of volume 2.

On the boards, within elaborate gilt borders, splendid colourful morocco onlays illustrate two of the "Bab" Ballads, 'The Yarn of the "Nancy Bell"' on the upper board and 'For he who'd make his Fellow-Creatures Wise should always Gild the Philosophical Pill' on the lower. Embellished with 350 illustrations, also by W. S. Gilbert. Very slight rubbing and an extensive neat ink inscription on the first blank, otherwise a pristine collection of Gilbert's light verse, named after is childhood nickname, in which he developed his "topsy-turvy" style of humour.

With a neat ink inscription, dated 1842 on the first blank. Sturm's 'Reflections' was hugely popular and influential in its day and has been in print ever since. Beethoven owned A copy of 'Reflections' which he annotated extensively.
