Calf Bindings

Paris: La Combe, 1766. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A splendid full 18th century mottled calf with twin labels, gilt bands and fine gilt floral tooling to the panels. FIRST EDITION of a lively miscellany of definitions icluding: Americains, amour conjugal, pantomimes, ruses de guerre and sourds et muets. Lacombe also composed the first dictionary of Old French.

Londres, 1753. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A charming full calf binding in fine condition. With gilt raised bands, gilt titles and panels, pink edges.

Paris: Desaint & Saillant, 1764. 5 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. Full mottled calf with gilt bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. With the bookplate of the Chateau de Cirey over defaced earlier bookplates in each volume. Woodcut ornaments. A very fine set.

London: Bohn, 1853. Full morocco, 8.5 inches tall. A most sumptious binding from the early Victorian period with gilt raised bands, dense gilt tooled panels. finely gilt boards, dentelles and all edges. A anthology of verse by the greatest British poets of the period, illustrated by some of the most illustrious artists. As is usually the case with this edition there is foxing, some severe, throughout.

Paris: Anisson, 1700. 2 volume set, 6.25 inches tall. Full mottled calf with gilt bands, twin labels and gilt panels. Pink edges. 'Doctor Doctus' is written by hand on the title page. A particularly handsome clean copy of this work.

New York: Gabriel Wells, 1924. 30 volume set, 9 inches tall. Half crushed morocco with gilt raised bands, titles and fine gilt tooled panels. Gilt top edge. Deluxe edition, limited to 1075 sets, the first volume of each set is signed by the author. Portrait. The definitive set of this great writers works in English in excellent condition.

London: Parker, 1854. Half calf, 6.5 inches tall. An elegant binding with twin labels, gilt raised bands and fine gilt panels. A lovely copy of the works of this fascinating 17th cenutry English poet. A fine copy.

London: Parker, 1856. Half calf, 6.5 inches tall. An elegant half calf binding with twin labels, gilt raised bands and fine gilt panels. The armorial bookplate of Lord Manning. This interesting volume contains the famous ballads from the end of the 14th century to the beginning of the 17th century including, Robin Hood, Chevy Chase, King Arthur's Death, Lady Greensleeves and Many others. A fine copy.

London: Parker, 1855. Half calf, 6.5 inches tall. An exceptionally elegant volume with twin labels, gilt raised bands and fine floral gilt panels. An interesting volume containing a collection of songs from the earliest English dramatists, including Shakespeare, and ending with Sheridan. In fine condition.

London: Routeledge, 1888. Half morocco, 11.25 inches tall. With elegant gilt tooling to the spine and top edge gilt. Limited to 800 copies of which this is number 741. Illustrated throughout by Maurice Leloir. The blue of the spine has faded but still an extremely elegant copy in English of this classic French title.

London: John Murray, 1916. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. A handsome Edwardian half morocco binding with raised bands, titles, simple gilt framed panels and gilt top edge. With 10 full page illustrations. An elegant copy of this fascinating work.

London: Longman, 1816 and 1820. 4 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. Elegant full calf Regency binding with wide gilt raised bands, twin labels and blind and gilt tooling to the panels and boards. All edges gilt. With the bookplate and signiture of Lord Elden. Slight fading to the spines and very minor worming to some joints but still a firm and handsome set.

London: Longman et al, 1835. Full calf, 6.5 inches tall. With a raised title and very wide raised gilt head and tail band. The lower panels have dense blind tooling within gilt rolls. Gilt and blind tooling to the boards. Engraved title page and vignettes throughout. Considerably rubbed edges but still perfectly tight and firm. A truly charming little volume.

Edinburgh: Edmonston & Douglas, 1857. Superb copy in full pink calf, 7 inches tall. With gilt raised bands, twin labels, thistle centre tools, dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate. With the original rather tatty paper wraps bound in and an owner's inscription dated 1887 on the first blank. A charming copy.

London: Strahan and Cadell, 1789. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. Straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, titles and delicate gilt and blind tooling to the panels. A particularly nice copy of this scarce work in a late 18th century binding.

London: 1757. 3 volume set, 6.75 inches tall. Superb full calf bindings of the period with gilt bands, twin labels and delightful floral tooling to the panels. The binding is in splendid condition other than some loss to the headcap of volume 1. The text and all the plates, some folding, are all particularly clean. This interesing edition has the text in both English and French and has corresponding English and French title pages. Although the title page states that the book was published in London, I would assume it was actually printed on the Continent. A fine set.

London: Moxon, 1872. 2 volumes bound in 1, 11 inches tall. A splendid large paper copy bound in full morocco by George Rutland of Newcastle. With raised bands, titles, very delicate and ornate gilt panels, dentelles and all edges gilt. The boards have elegant panels framed with heavy gilt rolls. With 44 full page engravings of scenes by Birket Foster. Slight fading to the spine but overall a fine copy.

Paris: Ollendorff, 1897. Half crushed morocco by Durvand, 7.5 inches tall. With raised bands, label and gilt top edge. The foredge has not been trimmed, causing a rather eccentric effect with some leaves extending about an inch further than others, a deluxe style of the period. There is an inscription from the author to an A.M.R. Rolo. A lovely. copy.

Oxford: Rivington, 1834. 6 volume set, 9 inches tall. A magnificent full calf binding by one of the great London binders of the period J. Clarke. With gilt raised bands, twin labels, ornate gilt tooling to the panels, dentelles and all edges. With the armorial bookplate of Henry Collins.

London: Lawrencea and Bullen, 1895. 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A handsome half crushed morocco with twin gilt raised bands, titles, exceptionally handsome panels and top edge. One of 1000 copies, of which this is 156, with many full page illustrations by E.R. Hughes. A wonderful copy of these risqué tales.
