MAGNIFICENT SET IN FULL HARD GRAIN MOROCCO
PERCY ~ Bishop Percy’s Folio Manuscript. Ballads and Romances (vols I-III); Loose and Humourous Songs (vol IV).
London: Trubner, 1867
4 volume set, 10 inches tall. A magnificent set of this extraordinary work in full hard grain morocco with raised bands, gilt titles, centre tools, dentelles and all edges. Blind tooling frames the panels and boards. With the armorial bookplate of Baron Houghton. The first edition of the original manuscript of English balladry written in the 17th century but going as far back in time as the 12th century. It is based on an old manuscript collection of poetry, which Percy claimed to have rescued in Humphrey Pitt's house at Shifnal, Shropshire, "from the hands of the housemaid who was about to light the fire with it." The often elusive 4th volume which contains the 'loose and humorous' ballads considered the most erotic and salacious, is present. A splendid (and very heavy) set.
