ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT IN MAGNIFICENT RENE KIEFFER FULL MOROCCO BINDING
GAUTIER, Théophile ~ Le Pavillon Sur L’Eau.
(The published version was printed by A Ferroud in Paris in 1900).
Full morocco, 13 inches tall. 48 original leaves of ink and watercolour manuscript by the illustrator Henri Caruchet. The printed title page is bound in. 46 leaves are composed of the original calligraphy each with a beautiful border decorated in the art nouveau style of Chinese design. There are traces of the original preparation and positioning in faint pencil marks. This is the manuscript original of the very popular work published by Ferroud in 1900. The binding, in full morocco, is by Rene Kieffer with raised bands, gilt title and stunningly embellished with morocco onlays creating a pattern of bamboo leaves on the spine and boards. The morocco doublures are magnificent with onlays representing lotus leaves, framed by a series of gilt rolls. The endpapers are of watered silk. The spine is slightly faded, though still bright and there is a tiny loss of leather at the top corner of the upper board. A remarkable and unique item.
