Charles Lamb was at the heart of a literary circle in the early 19th century along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth and William Hazlitt, he was described by his biographer E. V. Lucas as "the most lovable figure in English literature".
