Oxford: Talboys and Wheeler, and London: William Pickering, 1826-27. 13 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A very good looking Georgian full calf binding with gilt raised bands and labels. The volume number label is particularly elaborate. The panels exhibit classic Georgian gilt tooling. Twin fillets frame the boards. With portraits of the authors and of the monarchs throughout. Small bookplate on the paste down end paper of each volume. There is speckling to the boards, otherwise exceptionally clean inside and out. Hume, the great philosopher, historian and economist, covered the period from The Invasion of Julius Caesar to the reign of King James II. Tobias Smollett, historian, surgeon and writer of picaresque novels, continued this History from the reign of Queen Anne to the conclusion of the reign of George II. A splendid set.
