DELIGHTFUL COPY IN RENOWNED BINDING STYLE WITH TICKET

Poems by Samuel Rogers.

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1814. Full calf, 6 1/2 inches tall. A lovely little Regency binding with inked bands and superb gilt tooling to the panels with a contrasting green label. Very fine blind rolls and gilt corner tools and fillets frame the boards. Pretty vignettes throughout. There is the binder's ticket of 'Dawkins'. Ellic Howe in 'A List of London Bookbinders 1648-1815' states: "Dawkin was brought by Longman & Co. up from Yorkshire because he was famous for the thunder and lightening colouring. His place of business was in Bartholomew Close". This stormy 'colouring' can be seen in the billowing cloud pattern on this volume. A neat ink inscription on the first blank reads: "A prize obtained by Anthony Henry Cooke at the Royal Naval College Portsmouth June 1815". Cooke was a Midshipman on HMS Liffey and died aged 23 in Trincomalee in Ceylon, where a memorial was erected by his shipmates.
