EXTRAORDINARY FULL CALF

Lavengro.

London: Macmillan, 1914. Full calf, 7 1/2 inches tall. A striking full calf by Riviere (though not signed) in pristine condition. This very unusual style of binding consists of the main image being blocked on and then stained with inks and was a Riviere house style at the beginning of the last century. Here we have the figure of Lavengro, the scholar, gypsy and priest of the title sitting on a roadside mile-stone on the upper cover, food being cooked in a caldron on the lower and a floral device with gilt lettering on the spine. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Illustrated throughout by E.J. Sullivan. A classic of 19th-century English literature and George Borrow's masterpiece, Lavengro was first ignored by the critics and public alike but achieved great popularity towards the end of the 19th century with its sympathetic portrayal of Romany life, and has remained in print ever since.
