Life in Paris.
London: John Fairburn, 1822. Full morocco, 9 1/4 inches tall. The first edition in a glorious later full morocco binding by the great firm of Bedford in pristine condition. With gilt raised bands, superb floral gilt tooling to the panels, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, wide gilt dentelles and top edge gilt. With the armorial bookplate of Bertram Freeman Mitford, Earl of Redesdale, grandfather of the Mitford sisters. Embellished with 21 full page hand coloured aquatints and 22 woodcuts by George Cruikshank. These hilarious images illustrate 'the Rambles, Sprees, and Amours of Dick Wildfire, of Corinthian Celebrity, and his Bang-up Companion, Squire Jenkins and Captain O'Shuffleton; with the Whimsical Adventures of the Halibut family; Including Sketches of a Variety of other Eccentric Characters in the French Metropolis'. All 21 paper covers of the original parts are bound in at the rear. As are many adverts for other publications by the provocative publisher Fairburn including: "The Trial of Her Majesty Caroline Amelia Elizabeth, Queen of England, for alleged Adulterous Intercouse", "The Green-Eyed Monster, O'Killus!! or The Ladies Fancy, erected in Hyde Park" amongst many others. A beautiful copy of this great satire.
