London: Bickers and Son, 1879. 4 volume set, 9 inches tall. An unusual and rather splendid half morocco for Hatchards with a gilt tooled smooth back and gilt top edges. Striking end papers. A finely printed edition from the library of Alfred de Rothschild and with his bookplate in each volume. With a life of the author by Henry B. Wheatley. John Evelyn was a 17th century English author, gardener, courtier, founding Fellow of the Royal Society and is now best remembered as a great diarist.
