The Poems of Ossian.
London: Lackington, Allen. and Co. at the Temple of the Muses, 1806. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. An unusual and beautiful full straight grain morocco binding with wide delightfully gilt tooled raised bands with blind and gilt tooled pallets. The boards have a series of gilt and blind fillets and rolls and ornate gilt corner tools. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Portraits and full page engravings. Light foxing to the plates otherwise clean. Slight rubbing. On both title pages is written in a very neat hand: "This book belongs to Lord Beresford's Library at Bedgebury Park". This great Scottish epic poem was supposedly translated by James Macpherson from the Scottish Gaelic of Ossian but the current view is that Macpherson composed the poems himself, drawing in part on traditional Gaelic poetry he had collected. The work proved to be hugely popular and influential.
