A stunning Victorian full calf in pristine condition with gilt raised bands, contrasting twin labels in red and blue and dense extra gilding to the panels. The boards, with the gilt prize blocks of Oriel College Oxford, are framed with gilt and blind fillets and corner tools. An ink prize inscription, dated 1884, is on the first blank. Samuel Rawson Gardiner was the great 19th century English historian of the seventeenth century, specifically the Puritan revolution and the English Civil War.
