The binding is in sparkling condition with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are framed within a floral gilt fillet around a gilt embossed Wellington College block. Prize bookplate for Wellington College. Portrait. The first volume has the following inscription above the block: 'Presented in the name of The Prince Consort By H.R.H. The Duke of Connaught". The second volume's inscription reads:"The Legacy of Major Frew", the remaining 18 volumes have no such inscriptions over the block. One of the greatest Victorian writers and philosophers, Thomas Carlyle was one of the greatest influences of the period. A very fine set.
