Real Life in London; or, The Rambles and Adventures of Bob Tallyho, Esq. and His Cousin, The Hon. Tom Dashall, Through the Metropolis; Exhibiting a Living Picture of Fashionable Characters, Manners, and Amusements in High and Low Life.
London: Jones & Co., 1821 & 1822. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. Very elegant later full morocco by Riviere with gilt raised bands, very elaborate gilt tooling to the panels and twin gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Decorated with 35 superb and comic hand coloured aquatints showing parties, weddings, boxing, racing and many other scenes of rollicking and debauchery enjoyed by Regency London. This set includes 3 extra plates not listed. First editions. There are some minor expert paper repairs clearly carried out when so superbly rebound. Although often described as by Egan, 'Real Life in London' appears to be an imitation of Egan's 'Life in London'. But this anonymous author has a purer style and a greater knowledge of London and is a calmer book than its prototype.
