The Works of Cornelius Tacitus.
London: John Stockdale, 1807. 8 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A most attractive binding from the first decade of the 19th century with gilt bands, twin labels and splendid, if not engagingly chunky, gilt tooling to the panels. Blue speckled edges. Some rubbing and abrassions but with no splitting or loss. Translated by, and with an essay on his life, by Arthur Murphy. A splendid and rather scarce set of these classic histories in English.
