Officio de la Semana Santa. (Texts for the Masses of Holy Week)
Madrid: En la Imprenta del Norte, 1815. 10 volumes bound in 6, complete, 9.5 inches tall. A superb set in full Spanish calf, bound around 200 years ago, with gilt bands, twin labels and gilt 'Grecian Urn' centre tools. The boards are framed within wide gilt rolls. The edges are speckled yellow. This style originated in Spain and became much imitated by the finest London bookbinders around the middle of the 19th century. There are a few small scuffs and very minor rubbing, but no splitting and no restoration or repair.
The text contains the order of service for the Masses of Holy week in Spanish and Latin. The text is exceptionally large, evidently for use during the services but the pristine condition of the set would indicate that volumes have been little used, if at all. Palau (199404) records seeing the edition but not complete. He gives the location of the printers as Madrid but there is no indication of this on the title pages. A booksellers ticket from Barcelona is pasted in volume 1. OCLC records only one complete set, in the National Library of Spain, and only one other incomplete set in a German library. None have appeared at auction. A superb set of this very rare devotional work.
