Two 8 volume sets bound uniformly by White of Piccadilly in stunning full Spanish calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and superb gilt tooling to the panels. The extraordinary colours of the boards are framed within triple fillets and corner tools. All edges gilt. This rare style of decoration, originating in Spain was perfected by several of the finest English bookbinders in the middle of the 19th century. This is one of several sets bound in full Spanish calf that we presently have in stock. As well as being a great Historian, Alphonse de Lamartine was an influential Orientalist, pioneering vegetarian and is considered to be perhaps the first French romantic poet being acknowledged by Paul Verlaine and the Symbolists as an important influence.
