FINE COPY OF THIS VERY RARE FULL CALF RELIEVO BINDING
RELIEVO BINDING by De la Rue~ The Floral Album.
London: De la Rue, c.1850
Full calf, 11.25 inches tall. Probably the rarest of the superb early Victorian relievo bindings in remarkably fine condition. Probably designed by Owen Jones, many of the leaves have borders some in relief and some coloured. 28 of the leaves have a variety of adornments added, the rest remain blank. The calf binding in relief is superb and extraordinary with the title on the upper board within a complex floral design covering the spine and boards. The title and publisher are in gilt on the spine. Gilt doublures and watered silk endpapers. There is a faint stain to the corner of the lower board and an ink stain on the rear endpaper and a little rubbing to the corners and head and tail cap but no splitting or loss. The text block has 'dropped' slightly but still solid and firm. A most unusual, tall and spectacular relievo binding in remarkable unrestored condition.
