CLASSIC HISTORY IN SUMPTUOUS VICTORIAN FULL CALF
MOMMSEN, Theodor ~ The History of Rome.
London: Richard Bentley, 1868
4 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A sumptuous full calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels, the volume labels being particular lavish and extra gilt tooling to the panels. Folding map. Small neat bookplate. This is the best edition of Mommsen's work. One of the three great modern historians of Ancient Rome along with Gibbon and Niebuhr, Mommsen's is a brilliant account of the rise of the Republic, its decline and transformation into a monarchy under Caesar. He went on to win the 1902 Nobel Prize for Literature.
