A superb 19th century full morocco binding by Leighton with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. bookplate of A.H.Smith Barry, 1st Baron Barrymore. Two engraved frontispieces by Vidal, one engraved portrait of La Fontaine after Rigaud, 80 engraved plates after Eisen, 43 engraved culs-de-lampe, 2 engraved title vignettes and 2 engraved head-pieces. One of the better counterfeit editions, imitating the famous Fermiers-Generaux edition of 1762 (see our copy). Some foxing, especially on the preliminaries and margins, rarely affecting the plates and a dark mark on the lower board of volume 1, but still a superb copy of a rare edition.
