SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY WOODEN BINDING
(JONES, OWEN) ~ The Preacher.
London: Longman, 1849
Wooden boards, 11.5 inches tall. Wooden heat stamped boards with leather blind tooled spine. A very fine example of the only title known to have been produced by this process. Bound by Remnant & Edmonds after a design by Owen Jones. Slight nicks to the head and tail caps, otherwise in superb condition with no splitting and , most unusually, no damage at all to the wooden boards. With 34 glorious pages of chromolithographic illumination. The text is an extract from the Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapters 1-12 from the King James Bible. See page 31 of Ruari McLean's 'Victorian Publishers' Book-Bindings'. One of the most celebrated publisher's bindings of the 19th century.
