VERY SCARCE TITLE IN MOST ATTRACTIVE FULL CALF
HARINGTON, E.C. ~ The Succession of Bishops in the Church of England Unbroken; or, The Nag’s Head Fable Refuted.
London: Rivington, 1846
2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A superb classic Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, extra gilt tooling to the panels and triple labels, the one containing the volume cartouche being quite spectacular. Foxing to the preliminaries, otherwise clean. The Nag's Head fable mentioned in the title was a legend, much enjoyed and spread by Roman Catholics, that Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury under Elizabeth I, was consecrated with a Bible in the Nag's Head tavern in Cheapside! A lovely copy of a scarce and obscure title.
