2 volumes bound in 8, complete, 9.5 inches tall. A spectacular binding of the finest quality by Bayntun with gilt raised bands and extraordinary geometric gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Fine gilt doublures and gilt top edges, the rest deckled. This translation by Sir John Bourchier, Lord Berners was first printed in 1520-1523. This sumptuous edition of Berners translation of the Cronycles is embellished with many hundreds of coats of arms, all coloured by hand 'in their original tinctures'. This edition, limited to 350 copies, was dedicated, by permission, to King George V. These chronicles, printed on hand made paper, recount events in Western Europe during the Hundred Years War in the 14th century. This unique set is extra illustrated with 74 colour plates from the rare series of plates in gold and colour from the Illuminations in the Bibliotheque Royale and the British Library and 78 black and white engravings, 4 folding. A fine set of this great history in a beautifully printed edition, extra illustrated, in a superb binding of the highest quality.
