SPLENDID SET IN GEORGIAN FULL STRAIGHT GRAIN MOROCCO
DONOVAN, E(dward) ~ The Natural History of British Insects.
London: For the Author, 1793-1802
10 volume set, 9.5 inches tall. A very fine and most attractive set in full straight grain morocco, with gilt raised bands, dense gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels, the volume labels having a remarkable bee device. The straight grain on the boards is framed within a series of unusual gilt rolls and corner tools. All edges gilt. With all 360 very fine and delicately worked hand coloured engraved images of insects. With the bookplate of Edward Seymour Foster on the front pastedown and of Edmond Waller Rundell and neat inscription on the front free endpaper. Some rubbing to the shoulders but absolutely no wear or splitting. Volume 1 is a second issue, volumes 2-10 first issues. Donovan originally published the work in 10 volumes, as we have here, in 1806, with his acquisition of further specimens, a further 6 volumes were published. A beautiful set of this original edition.
