MAGNIFICENT SET IN FULL MOROCCO
DALRYMPLE, John ~ Memoirs of Great Britain and Ireland. From the last Parliament of Charles II. until the Sea-battle off La HOGUE.
London & Edinburgh: Strahan and Cadell & Kincaid, Bell, Balfour and Creech, 1771,1773 and 1788.
2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A spectacular binding with gilt raised bands, twin olive labels and elegant tooling to the panels. The boards are framed within a triple fillet and dog tooth roll. Wide gilt dentelles and all edges gilt. Slight foxing to the preliminaries, otherwise clean. With the armorial bookplate of Leonard L. Hartley Esq. (English genealogist and book collector) and the Ex libris of William O'Brien Milltown Park Trust. Second edition. Three volumes in two, complete. The second volume, which is bound in volume one, has a 1788 Edinburgh imprint, with additional engraved titlepage. The 'second volume' of the 1788 Edinburgh edition was in fact intended to form a third volume, hence its inclusion here. The work caused a sensation when it was published because of Dalrymple's use of letters from the French ambassadors in England to their courts as well as the correspondence of Charles II, James II, William, and Mary, revealing many personal motives. A superb set.
