SCARCE EDITION IN SUPERB EARLY 18TH CENTURY FULL MOROCCO BINDING
BIBLE ~ Biblia Hebraica.
Frankfurt am Main: Johann (Ioannis) Philipp Andreas, 1716
2 volumes, 8.5 inches tall. A remarkable early 18th century full crushed morocco binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. All edges gilt with delightful gauffering. The boards have fine gilt tooling with rolls, fillets and corner tools framing an armorial crest. We can not identify the I I I (J J J?) at the foot of the spines or the armorial crest bearing a dog sitting upright on its haunches. We think the binding is probably German Protestant but would welcome any opinion on its origin. The endpapers are gorgeous with some relief and silver that does not appear in the photograph. Hebrew text and Latin title and introduction.
