FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS IN SUPERB ROSE CRUSHED MOROCCO
ARISTOPHANES (MITCHELL, Thomas, translated into English by) ~ The Comedies of Aristophanes.
London: John Murray, 1820
2 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A superb full crushed morocco by White of Pall Mall. With gilt bands, labels and very elegant gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With the calf bookplate of the Earl of Gosford of Armagh, whose library was dispersed in the 1880's whence it entered the collection of William O'Brien, the Irish judge and then to the Jesuit college at Milltown Park, whose stamps are on the title pages. Slight sunning and spotting to the boards. A splendid copy of the first edition of these translations, 3 of which appear here in English for the first time, The Wasps, The Knights and The Acharnians. The first complete edition of Aristophanes in English did not appear until 1837. Mitchell's translations did justice to Aristophanes' metrical variety and were much admired by, amongst others, Byron.
