STAPLETON, Augustus Granville.
The Political Life of the Right Honourable George Canning, from his acceptance of the seals of the foreign department, in September, 1822, to the period of his death, in August, 1827...
LIFE OF GEORGE CANNING
London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1831.
3 vols., 8vo (8½" tall). Half calf. Wide gilt raised bands. Blind tooled panels and gilt titles. An unusual and pleasing set. Armorial bookplates.
Eminent statesman and author, Canning was appointed foreign secretary in 1822 and premier in 1827. Much to detriment of his reputation, Canning's oratory skills appeared to lack sincere conviction; Stapleton's biography has however been credited with proving "beyond risk of contradiction... that in all his great orations, however elaborate the texture, he spoke from his heart" (DNB). Stapleton's work also covers issues including Greek affairs, the Portuguese in Brazil and the slave trade.
