POEMS OF WILLIAM COWPER ILLUSTRATED BY WESTALL
London: Printed for John Sharpe; by C. and C. Whittingham, Chiswick, 1825.
3 vols., 12mo (6.5" tall). Full calf, with twin black labels, wide gilt raised bands and gilt rules framing panels. Triple gilt rule framing both boards. Ornate gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. Illustrated with fine engraved plates after Richard Westall. Neat inscription to first blank. Slightly spotted. An excellent set.
A very handsome set of Cowper's poems in a luxurious binding, with superb illustrations after Westall. Cowper was of one the most popular poets of his day, with highlights including the ballad John Gilpin and his highly successful poem about rural ease, The Task. Although perhaps less known today, his work remains important for its far-reaching influence on the development of a more natural style in English poetry.
