WORKS OF HOPKINSON SMITH
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1902-15.
20 works in 26 vols., 8vo (8" tall). Half crushed
morocco by Stikeman. Superb set with gilt raised bands.
Gilt panels in the floral 'art nouveau' style, titles
and top edge. Slight darkening of the red after volume
16, which also has minor wear to hinges and darkening.
One of 40 sets with a number of illustrations signed by
the artists, bound in half crushed levant, from an
edition of 204 sets with the portrait signed by the
author and printed on Ruisdael hand-made paper, with
extra illustrations in colour. An exceptional art
nouveau binding by Stikeman. Despite not beginning his
career as a writer until the age of 50, Francis
Hopkinson Smith produced a notable catalogue of work,
including Colonel Carter of Cartersville and The
Fortunes of Oliver Horn, a semi-autobiographical story
of a young painter in Baltimore and New York.
