STUNNING VELVET AND BRASS CLASPED SET
BIBLE,
The Holy Bible & The Book of Common Prayer
Oxford: The Unviersity Press, 1838 & 1836
2 volume set, 5 inches tall in original calf bound box. Full velvet binding with brass edging and fully functioning clasps, with brass plates entitled 'Bible' and 'Prayer' on the upper board. Watered silk doublures and free endpapers with velvet turnins, all edges gilt. With 2 neat inscriptions, 1 on the reverse of the free endpaper, a 'Presented to Diana Anne Wynter by Arthur Viscount Dungannon AD 1839', the other to 'Philip Wynter...from his Mother. St. John's College 1839'. With a tiny booksellers ticket, 'Sold by Houghton, 161 Bond Street'. The condition is excellent, with only minor fading and rubbing to the spine, unlike most velvet bindings of this period. The case has lost its ribbons but and is slightly rubbed but is in otherwise good working order. A charming and splendid survival.
