6 vols., 12mo (5½" tall). Full calf. Handsome eighteenth century bindings with raised bands, gilt pallets, titles and interesting decorated endpapers. With the neat library stamp of an Ostend (?) monastery to the title page and a small index label on the front endpaper.
Marquis d'Argens was a well-known philosopher and man of letters in eighteenth century France. His popular Lettres Chinoises were one of a series of Lettres, all of which were patterned after Montesquieu's brilliantly satirical Lettres Persanes and challenged the established order of French society.
